ENG 272 (Alpha) studies the theme of Literature and Culture though significant works of selected cultures and cultural formations focusing on the cultural contexts of literary texts. Course work includes critical thinking skills related to interpreting the significance of the action, characters,themes, characters , and literary devices used by the author. Emphasis is placed on writing, both as a way of discovering ideas and as a way of expressing knowledge of the reading material. Students are expected to be actively engaged in responding to the literature. As students read, discuss, and write about the literature, they should gain a better understanding of themselves and the world they live in. The content may vary from topic to topic , depending on the particular works selected for study. Upon successful completion of ENG 272 (Alpha), the student should be able to: Analyze a work of literature as a reflection of its cultural milieu and compare that milieu with one's own. Identify and use literary terms to analyze literary works. Identify major themes in a work of literature, explore their implications, and identify their basic assumptions. Analyze structure; explain how form contributes to meaning. Evaluate the artistic merits of literary works and the artistic achievements of writers. Use literary evidence to support interpretations and ideas regarding literary works. Produce clear and effective written responses to literature Describe the cultural diversity of world views expressed in literary works
