A study of music for solo voice on sacred texts. The topic is approached chronologically with discussion of the earliest traditions of solo singing in the context of Christian worship, of applicable repertoire from the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, of the socalled sacred art song of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and a broad range of cantata and oratorio arias. Larger works (e.g., song cycles and solo cantatas) and repertoire for specific occasions and purposes within the church year will also be discussed. Format will include lectures, listening, and lab performances.
