(Prerequisite: Program admission) Introduces funda mental microbiology and infection control techniques. Topics include: classification, structure, and behavior of pathogenic microbes; mode of disease transmission; body's defense and immunity; infectious diseases; and infection control procedures in accordance with CDC recommendations and OSHA guidelines.

(Prerequisite: Program admission) Focuses on the de velopment and functions of oral anatomy Topics in clude: dental anatomy, oral histology, and oral embryology.

(Prerequisite: DEN 106, DEN 101) Focuses on the diseases affecting the oral cavity and pharmacology as it relates to dentistry. Topics include: identification and disease process, signs/symptoms of oral diseases and systemic diseases with oral manifestations, developmen tal abnormalities of oral tissues, basic principles of phar macology, drugs prescribed by the dental profession, drugs that may contraindicate treatment, and applied pharmacology (regulations, dosage, and application).

(Prerequisite: Successful completion of all dental assist ing didactic courses or two years of full-time work expe rience (3,500 hours) as a dental assistant, along with recommendation from the dentist employer) Reviews information concerning all didactic areas tested by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). Topics in clude: collecting and recording clinical data, dental radiography, chairside dental procedures, prevention of disease transmission, patient education and oral health management, office management procedures, and test taking skills.

(Prerequisite: Program admission; Pre/Corequisite: AHS 104, DEN 105, DEN 106) Introduces students to chairside assisting with diagnostic and operative proce dures. Topics include: four-banded dentistry techniques, clinical data collection techniques, introduction to operative dentistry, dental material basics, and infection control procedures in the dental environment with emphasis on CDC and ADA guidelines.

(Prerequisite: DEN 134) Focuses on chairside assisting with operative and nonsurgical specialty procedures. Topics include: operative dentistry, prosthodontic pro cedures (fixed and removable), orthodontics, and pedi atric dentistry.

(Prerequisite: DEN 135) Focuses on chairside assisting in surgical specialties. Topics include: periodontic procedures, oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures, endodontic procedures, management of dental office emergencies, and medically compromised patients.

(Prerequisites: DEN 134, DEN 135; Corequisite: DEN 136) Focuses on expanded duties of dental auxiliary per sonnel approved by the Georgia Board of Dentistry. Topics include: expanded functions approved by law for perfor mance by dental assistants in the state of Georgia.

(Prerequisite: Program admission) Focuses on ethics, juris prudence, and employability skills for the dental assistant. Students will relate integration of didactic and laboratory instruction with clinical experiences. Topics include: ethics and jurisprudence related to the dental office, and employ-ability skills.

(Prerequisite: DEN 102; Corequisite: DEN 106) After completion of the course the student will be able to pro vide radiation safety for patient and self, expose x-rays, and prepare dental films for the dental office. Topics include: fundamentals of radiology and radiation safety, radio graphic anatomy and interpretation, intraoral and extraoral radiographic techniques, and quality assurance techniques.
