ARTS 4237: Narrative Illustration
3.00 Credits
Columbus State University
Prerequisite: ARTS 1011. Words and pictures have been used together to communicate since the ancient beginnings of language. In this course students use drawing and writing together to tell stories. The synthesis of words and images is a practice that relates to such diverse media as filmmaking, advertising, painting, and printmaking. The contemporary graphic novel, or comic book, requires of its maker a complex and subtle combination of visual and linguistic skills. Iconography, chronology, syntax and aesthetics are explored in this course. Students apply their existing drawing skills to tasks that prioritize communication over realism. This course develops skills of communication, critical thinking, and interpretation. Students spend a great deal of time drawing and developing scripts in this course. We look at graphic novels, illustration and film to discuss visual narratives. Students will gain and demonstrate competence in art theory, criticism/aesthetics, portfolio development, and critique skills. This course also develops communication, critical thinking, and interpretative skills.
