This course includes a descriptive analysis of some of the major psychotherapeutic systems theories that serve as the basis of family therapy practice in the United States today. The course will include general systems theory, followed by a comparison of natural systems, cybernetic systems, and the beginning of language systems. A particular emphasis will be placed on cybernetic systems and its relationship to both natural and general systems theory. Implications of systematic thought for ideas about the nature of change will be addressed via clinical case examples and class activities.
