This course examines herbal psychotropic drugs, with an emphasis on herbal psychotherapeutic drugs-their pharmacology (pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics), indications, contraindications, side effects and interactions with other medications; as well as natural sources from which herbal psychotropic drugs are derived and their potential for causing serious toxic reactions and compulsive abuse. A separate module on natural and spiritual healing--focusing specifically on the use of Mayan remedies, their origins and psychosocial benefits-- will comprise the final third of the course, which is offered in Belize, Central America. This upper level seminar intended for psychology majors will focus on topical and controversial issues in psychology. These current issues may include questions such as the following: Are gender differences rooted in the brain? Can intelligence be increased? Is electroconvulsive therapy safe? Is marriage psychologically beneficial? The issues covered each time the seminar is offered will vary but will always integrate classroom learning and practical application of psychology material. Integration of classroom study with specific planned periods of supervised learning in paid and relevant employment experiences. This course covers basic topics and issues in psychometrics and clinical psychology research. Topics will include: Scales of measurement, norms and standard scores, reliability (including interclinician reliability), psychometric validity (including diagnostic validity), experimental design validity (internal, external, statistical, construct), test and scale construction strategies (classical true score and item response theory), current clinical research objectives and designs, major threats to valid inferences in clinical research, experimental and statistical methods of control, the design of psychotherapy efficacy studies, and the identification of clinically signifi- cant client changes [9/7/1999]
