Presents the medical basis and interpretation to psychiatric diagnoses using the DSM IV. Explores various clinical conditions, psychotropic drug manifestations, and classical clinical behaviors. Introduces various psychiatric theories, assessment tools, and discusses interpretation and rationale for occupational therapy intervention. Lecture/Presentations. Prerequisites: PSYC-050, 116, 118, and 123 or 125, OCCP-301, and must be taken immediately preceding OCCP-412.

Explores the meaning of human occupation through the construction, analysis, and therapeutic application of major and minor crafts, leisure activities and games. Using the teaching-learning process, task analysis, use of the ICIDH-2 classification and Uniform Terminology, the student learns the health maintenance perspective of human occupation. Students analyze activities from the biomechanical, developmental, cognitive and psychosocial perspective. Lab Course. Taken concurrently with OCCP-321 and MDAN-170.

This laboratory course is subdivided into two sections. Section I emphasizes the construction, analysis and use of woodworking as a therapeutic medium in the development, restoration and maintenance of occupational performance. Proper use of tools and materials with attention to tool design, modifications and adaptations that address clinical conditions are key components of this section of the course. Section 2 of the course teaches upper and lower extremity manual muscle testing and goniometry. Prerequisites: OCCP-308.

Introduces basic concepts of occupational therapy, history of the profession, roles and role performance, the organizational development and purpose of AOTA, AOTF, NBCOT and the accreditation process. Introduces payment structures, legislation, clinical practice settings, and the role of theory and assessment in the therapeutic intervention process from a biomechanical, rehabilitative, and psychosocial perspective. The practical application portion of this course teaches activities of daily living using techniques and modified adaptive tools. Interactive Lecture/Lab. Prerequisites: must be taken concurrently with or following MDAN-170 and OCCP-305 and 321.

Presents the basic intervention concepts for addressing residual physical dysfunctions with special emphasis on orthopedic and neurological dysfunctions. Students learn appropriate evaluation techniques, activities of daily living, intervention planning, implementation, analysis, and proper application of therapeutic equipment. Interactive Lecture/demonstration course. Prerequisites: OCCP-310, MDAN-170, and OCCP-321 or concurrently with OCCP-302, and OCCP-304.

Introduces general pathology including the physiological and anatomical changes accompanying disease, injury, or abnormal development, along with current concepts and trends in care and medical management. Lecture. Prerequisites: OCCP-321; and must be taken concurrently with OCCP-304 and 317.

Presents an overview of wellness and health including disability prevention and health promotion along with the basic concepts of medical, surgical, and physical management of disease and impairment of selected conditions frequently seen in occupational therapy practice. Interactive Lecture. Must be taken concurrently with OCCP-316.

1.00 - 6.00 Credits
An elective course that promotes professional development through independent study by encouraging an individual or group of students to pursue a specialized area of professional interest, or in depth course of study in a defined area of occupation or occupational performance under the direction of a faculty member. Prerequisite: consent of the instructor and advisor, and an approved learning contract.

4.00 Credits
Analyzes normal and abnormal muscle functions based on the related principles of biomechanics, musculoskeletal anatomy, and neuromuscular physiology through lecture/lab. Completes a detailed analysis of upper and lower extremity structures and functions. Prerequisites: admission to the program and taken concurrently with MDAN-170.

4.00 Credits
Presents advanced theory and concepts in physical dysfunctions, including intervention approaches of NDT, PNF, and sensory integration. Prerequisites: OCCP-311, and must be taken the last semester in residence before admission to fieldwork.
