Designed for students with little or no prior experience with Italian. Introduction to the basic principles of language necessary for written and oral communication. Students use fundamental principles of vocabulary and grammar structures to talk about daily life and gain insights into aspects of Italian culture through simple readings and Internet activities. Students who took the language in high school for more than one year MUST take the language placement test before registering for this or any other language course in order to receive proper credit.

This exclusively communicative course focuses on the practical aspects of living in Italy. During each class, students will learn and practice different tasks directly related to living in Italy. This course will offer basic language instruction to cover practical interactions, from purchasing food in markets and supermarkets, ordering meals at restaurants, to handling transportation issues (bus and subway tickets) to asking for directions. The goal of this one-credit course is to prepare Architecture students planning on a semester abroad in Italy to cope with fast Italian speakers, currency, metric system, and other challenges.
