Designed to assist freshman students in establishing their identity with the nursing profession. Lecture/discussion format addresses the following topics: history of nursing, nursing roles, current ideas and trends in nursing and the health care delivery system, ethics, and professionalism. Requires one clock hour of class per week and one clock hour of on-line discussion. Open to students in other schools. Offered first semester. The entire class is divided into two halves with half of the class taking the course the first 7 weeks of the semester & the second half of the class taking the class the second 7 weeks.

This course is an introduction to the professional and scientific foundations of nursing practice. Course content includes the historical foundations of nursing and its development as a profession; the scientific processes and frameworks underlying nursing theory and practice; health care delivery systems, and the various roles of the nurse in the community. Students will be introduced to the nursing process and select teaching learning theories. Offered first semester. Requires three clock hours of class per week. Prerequiste: Biol 232, 233, 233 & Chem 109/119 or department consent.

Introduction to the evolution of nursing science. Focuses on scientific concepts and frameworks underlying professional nursing practice. Considers ethics of nursing science, caring as a professional knowledge base, and nurse as inquirer and teacher. Emphasis on relationship between knowledge and practice through the use of appropriate technology. Requires two clock hours of class per week. Offered both semesters.

The course examines the role and impact of communication in health care. A comprehensive approach is used, which exposes students to ideas, emotional understandings, strategies, professional perspectives, and current technology that enhance effective communication in nursing practice. Requires three clock hours of class per week. Open to students in other schools, offered both semesters.

Focuses on the physiological, social, economic, and life style factors that influence nutritional status, food choices, and specific life stage concerns. The purpose of this course is to provide the foundation for an understanding of the relationship of diet to physiological and pathophysiological functions. Requires two clock hours of class per week. Offered both semesters as a on-line course. Open to students in other schools.

Introduces students to professional nursing skills used in basic health assessment of an adult client and across the lifespan. Content will address developmental, psychosocial, environmental, and health promotion factors in nursing care. For traditional 4 year students, requires two clock hours of class, one clock hour of on-line teaching and three hours of laboratory per week for the entire semester. For accelerated students, requires three clock hours of class, two clock hours of on-line teaching and three hours of laboratory per week in a condensed semester format. Offered first and second semester to 4 year students and offered only in the first semester for accelerated students.

Focuses on theories, concepts, and the appropriate technology related to health, and health promotion. Concentrates on factors that influence health, and strategies that enhance the care of individuals, communities, and the Nation through the promotion of healthy lifestyles and a healthy environment. Requires two clock hours of class per week. Open to non-majors. Offered both semesters.
