ML 340: African Literature
3.00 Credits
Catholic University of America
Despite its geographical unity, Africa offers a wide variety of cultures. This course will provide a tour of the continent from north to south and west to east through the writings of African authors in English translation. Because social issues cannot be ignored in African literature, we will focus on the past and present situation of various social groups. After discussing the clash of African traditions with European values in Nigeria's Ibo tribe, we will hear the heartrending cry of Senegalese women for equal rights. Attention will also be paid to the maghrebi's daily life in Moroccan Islamic society and to the grassroots struggle of South Africans for freedom and recognition. Arabic, English, and French-speaking writers from Africa will take the floor to present their respective cultures. Join them for a better knowledge of the black continent. Authors and works studied include Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart, Mariama Ba, So Long a Letter, Tahar Ben Jelloun, The Sacred Night, Alex La Guma, A Walk in the Night.
