Ways in which Cavafy simultaneously appeals to and resists prevailing notions of writing, desire, language, the classical tradition, and modernity. His contributions to our understanding of the history and politics of Greek and gay identity in the twentieth century.

Comparison of occupation experiences under different conquerors, with an emphasis on Nazi and Soviet rule. Occupational patterns, collaboration and resistance, genocide, and the impact of military and diplomatic events on the internal social and political developments of individual European nations. Greece used as a case study.

Staff. htba (0) For students with advanced language skills in modern Greek who wish to engage in individual study or concentrated reading and research on material not otherwise offered in courses. Applicants submit a detailed project proposal to the language studies coordinator. The student must meet with the instructor for at least one hour each week, and the work must terminate in a term paper or its equivalent.
