    The goal of this course is to promote an overall awareness of the health care system and issues which impact the delivery of healthcare in the United States. Topics covered include managed care, HMOs, Medicare, Medicaid and the changing healthcare environment. Insurance coding, filing of claims and third party reimbursement are also examined.

    This course offers a continuation of the study of the theory, practice, and techniques of the clinical components of medical assisting. Building on knowledge and skills developed in MED 110, emphasis is placed on specimen collection and handling, performing routine diagnostic hematology and chemistry tests, obtaining EKGs and performing urinalysis. In addition, concepts of quality assurance, quality control, and OSHA regulations are covered. Students are required to perform capillary and venous blood collections. Comprehensive final examinations, written and competency based, covering MED 110 and MED 210 are required. Pre-requisites (degree program): ENG 101, INF 101, MED 106, MED 110, MED 201

    This course introduces the student to medication therapy. The nature and properties of drugs are examined. The administration of medications, their dosages, and consequences are presented. Emphasis is placed on the need for patient education concerning medication therapy. Contemporary legal issues in pharmacology are examined.     The course provides the student with an opportunity to develop listening skills and transcription techniques. Medical terminology learned in MED 105 is reinforced. Emphasis is on correct use of terminology, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting special medical forms.     This course provides supervised placement in a non-classroom setting at a healthcare facility, medical office or other appropriate site. This experience enables the student to synthesize and apply concepts and skills learned in the Medical Assisting program. Four credits are earned by the student upon the completion of a minimum of 160 hours to a maximum of 200 hours of Externship experience. The Externship experience is divided evenly between clinical and administrative areas to permit student involvement in the total environment of the facility. Each student is required to perform unaided blood collections in a facility under the supervision of a preceptor. The phlebotomy experience may take place in a hospital, ambulatory care center or other appropriate facility where the number and variety of patients provide ample experience. In addition, six hours of classroom seminars held at the College are required during the semester. Clinical affiliations are arranged with physician's offices and outpatient clinics, under contractual agreements set up by the College. The one semester externship in medical assisting (MED 289) is the clinical experience for the program. This 4 credit, 16 week, 160 hour course involves student placement in clinical settings during the last semester of study in the major. The externship is structured and supervised by the College.     60 hours theory; 135 hours clinical This course is designed to introduce students to selected concepts and theories which will be used as a foundation throughout the curriculum. Emphasis is placed on the use of the nursing process as well as teaching - learning concepts, basic communication, applied nutritional concepts, pharmacological concepts, dosage calculations, assessment and technical skills, deficits and 32 disorders related to the musculoskeletal and sensory systems and pain management. Co-requisites: BIO 211, MAT 140, PSY 101

    7 hours theory, 21 hours clinical This course is designed to introduce students to the basic tenets of the program in nursing as well as the conceptual framework. Emphasis is placed on a health needs assessment and the implementation of the nursing process through the use of the nursing care plan. This course is open to licensed practical nurses who are participating in the Connecticut Articulation Model for Nurse Educational Mobility.     37.5 hours theory; 112.5 hours clinical This course is designed to offer the student the opportunity to utilize the nursing process to care for patients with disorders and dysfunction in specific physiological systems: gastro-intestinal, reproductive, endocrine and peripheral vascular. Students are offered experience in pre-, peri-, and post-operative nursing care. Concepts of nutrition and pharmacology are integrated throughout the course. Pre-requisite: NUR 101 Co-requisites: BIO 212, PSY 112
