This course presents a systematic exploration of the causes and conditions of major social changes. Social movements such as the civil rights and women's movements are studied in terms of their capacity to respond to and generate additional change. Prerequisite: SO 101; Every Other Year

The student devotes eight hours a week to work in a public or private community agency and two hours a week in conference with the instructor or in a seminar. The position is tailored to the student's preparation and interests and to the needs of the agency. The student learns how an organization actually works, its relation to other organizations in the community, how it serves its clients, and the problems that confront it.
