Further development in both spoken and written Japanese beyond the elementary level. Students are required to communicate with native speakers in a socio-linguistically and culturally appropriate manner. Video tapes and selected readings are used to develop these skills. An examination of Japanese narratives of crime, punishment, and revenge, with special attention to the effect of Japan's modernization upon notions of justice and human nature. Readings will include medieval morality tales, Noh and Kabuki dramas, Tokugawa-period popular fiction, several twentiethcentury novels and detective stories, and a selection from at least one manga ( comic book). Films by Kurosawa Akira, Imamura Sh?ei, Kobayashi Masaki and others. No knowledge of Japanese is required. Prerequisite: East Asian Studies 101 recommended. M. Silver

An examination of key themes in Japanese film and its criticism, including the clash of tradition and modernity, nationalism, gender, and violence as a sign of cultural authenticity. Emphasis on classics of the 1950s-1960s by Ozu, Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, Kinoshita, Naruse, and Oshima, with some contemporary films as well. Prerequisite: East Asian Studies 101 or Course 206 recommended. Not open to students who have received credit for Freshman Seminar 155. M. Silver

Students learn to express opinions and narrate experiences in all major time frames in paragraph length discourse. Special emphasis on developing reading and writing skills. Materials include newspapers, magazines, articles, essays, short stories, advertisements, and comic books. Students are required to study Kanji (Chinese characters) independently.
