HES 162: Basic Swimming

LEC 0 hrs., LAB 2 hrs., Course fee $10 This course is designed for the non-swimmer or beginner swimmer who has had little or no instructional experience and who may feel uncomfortable in the water. Through this course one will gain basic swimming and diving skills progressing from shallow to deep-water swimming. The National American Red Cross Swimming Levels I-III will be covered.

Major topics include bioenergetics, the physiology of the circulatory, respiratory, muscular and nervous systems as they apply to exercise, and the underlying physiological basis of fitness. Laboratory experiences will illustrate practical application of theoretical content, with hands-on experiences to measure and apply what is learned in the lecture component of the course. (BIO 102 is strongly recommended as a pre-requisite to this course.)

Students will learn how to develop individualized and properly designed exercise prescriptions for adults, including special populations.
