    Prerequisite: ARA 112 or permission of department chairperson. LEC 3 hrs.; LAB 0 hrs. This course satisfies the Diversity/Global Perspective requirement provided the language is not the student's native language. This course briefly reviews the grammar covered in Elementary Arabic II. It expands the Arabic vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing skills of those students wishing to attain intermediate knowledge of the Arabic language.

    LEC. 1 hr., LAB 3 hrs., Course fee $75 Art Start is designed to introduce the novice, the absolute beginning student to; a basic history of art, and the tools and techniques used to make art, and the simple pleasure and experience of working with a variety of materials to create expressive art objects. No talent or prior experience is required. Instruction will emphasize process over product, and hands on experience as an avenue to understanding art theory and philosophy. Art Start experiences will include collage, assemblage, drawing, watercolor painting, acrylic painting, printmaking, and clay sculpture. This course is aerobics for the brain and soul food for the creative artist hiding within every person.

    LEC. 3 hrs., LAB 0 hrs. Prerequisite: ART 134 Contemporary Art is launched with a review of 19th and 20th century art and then brings you to the here and now, the art, and the artists of today. In lectures, multimedia presentations, and field experiences, you will be exposed to the pluralism of the new global art world.

    LEC. 3 hrs., LAB 0 hrs. This course satisfies the General Education requirement for all majors except Visual Arts and Design American Art embarks on a visual journey to the sacred sites and allows you to hold with your eyes the spiritual art objects of the Native Americans. The journey then continues through lectures, slide and video presentations, with the colonization of the Americans, bringing arts, crafts, and architecture, across the Atlantic. The birth of a new nation also delivered a new and uniquely American vision. From the early limners, to the great American portrait painters, Eakins and Sargeant; from the art of slaves to the visual jazz of Jacob Lawrence; from Spanish missions to the political murals of Diego Rivera; from the majestic landscapes of Frederick Church, to the Rock and Roll of Robert Raushenberg and Andy Warhol; American Art is a wild ride.

    LEC. 2 hrs., LAB 3 hrs., Course fee $50 In Drawing I, the beginning art student learns the methods, materials, and visual information needed to draw what we see. In small steps students will be lead through a series of simple exercises designed to build competence and confidence. The diversity and complexity of the subjects drawn will gradually grow along with student's drawing and visual skills. Students will create a sketch book and a portfolio including still life drawings, land-scape drawings, perspective drawings, and drawings of the human figure. Materials used will include pencil, charcoal, conte crayon, and ink.

    Prerequisite: ART 122 LEC. 2 hrs., LAB 3 hrs., Course fee $50 Drawing II is an intermediate level drawing course designed for students who wish to build upon the skills and knowledge acquired in Drawing I. Students will explore a wide range of tools, mediums, and surfaces. Larger scale drawings, the introduction of color in drawings, and experimentation with subjects and visual space will be encouraged. Drawing II will also include a study of basic anatomy for artists and an introduction to drawing from live nude models, both male and female. By semester's end successful students will have created a sketch book and diverse portfolio of competent and expressive drawings that will complement the portfolio begun in Drawing I.

    Prerequisites: ART 122, ART 123 LEC. 2 hrs., LAB 3 hrs., Course fee $75 In Figure Drawing, student artists draw from live nude models, both male and female, study in depth anatomy for artists and explore a variety of methods and materials to create expressive drawings of the human figure. By the end of the semester, successful students will have created a wide selection of figure drawings that will support the drawing portfolio begun in Drawing I and continued in Drawing II.

    LEC. 2 hrs., LAB 3 hrs., Course fee $50 In Two Dimensional Design, you will learn through lectures, multimedia presentations, and simple drawing, painting, and collage projects, how to control and compose visual forces on a two dimensional plane. These visual forces include line, shape, light, texture, scale, and an introduction to color, put to use on two dimensional surfaces such as paper, board, canvas, and walls. Student artists who successfully complete this course will have a solid initial portfolio and the fundamental knowledge and basic skills needed to create better, more effective photographs, drawings, painting prints, illustrations, designs and graphic designs.

    Prerequisites: ART 122, ART 130 LEC. 2 hrs., LAB 3 hrs., Course fee $50 In Color Theory, you will learn through lectures, multimedia presentations, and assigned projects, using a variety of art mediums, how color affects the human eye, mind, body, and spirit. Student artists who successfully complete this course will add a strong body of project art, that exhibits a working knowledge of color theory and its application in the visual arts, to the initial portfolio of artwork created in Drawing I and Two Dimensional Design.

    Prerequisites: ART 122, ART 130 LEC 2 hrs., LAB 3 hrs., Course fee $50 In Three Dimensional Design, you will learn through lectures, multimedia presentations, and assigned projects using a variety of materials, the basic aspects of planning, sketching, and modeling, so as to understand and control the visual and physical forces inherent in the creation of three dimensional objects. These visual and physical forces include, line, plane, volume, mass, and surface. Student artists who successfully complete this course will add a body of three dimensional art work to the now substantial portfolio of artwork initiated in Drawing I and Two Dimensional Design and Color Theory. Student artists will also posses the fundamental knowledge and basic skills needed to pursue further studies in sculpture, ceramics, design (product, industrial, interior, fashion), and architecture.
