Basic instruction in all varieties of stage movement including dance, mime, stage combat (hand-to-hand and weapons), t'ai chi and creative movement. Scene study and character work. Covers reading, discussion, and interpretation of plays, films, radio and television in both the comic and serious genre. Materials will be drawn from both modern and historical scripts, as well as from all parts of the world. Emphasis on how to read a play and understand its unique structure. Recommended Preparation: Eligibility for ENGL 100 and READ 100. Presents an intensive analysis of Shakespearean texts, particularly verse. Designed to sensitize and aid the actor in developing a rehearsal process. Performance of monologues and scenes. Prior experience in a beginning to intermediate acting class is recommended. Examines dramatic literature from texts, through rehearsals of voice usage and staging, to performance. Lectures, practice sessions, casual and formal readings and production.
