An introductory course intended to give the student an overview of statutes, regulations, and ethics pertaining to Registered Veterinary Technicians, and introduction to medical terminology as it pertains to animal health care, and an introduction to record keeping techniques and requirements. Recommended: ANSC B20 (may be taken concurrently). Hours: 36 lect. Field trip required. CCS: Occupational Education. Not Transferable: Associate Degree only.

Covers the anatomical and physiological similarities and differences of domestic animals. Integumentary, cardiovascular, respiratory, reproductive, gastrointestinal and neurological systems. Basic nutritional requirements of domestic animals will be presented in context of relating to development and health. Hours: 36 lect. CCS: Occupational Education. Presents knowledge of diseases in small animals, including diagnosis, prevention, and treatment programs. Includes instruction in physical diagnosis and discussion of tests and procedures needed for proper diagnosis. Also covers animal husbandry procedures relating to disease prevention. Disease entities to be taught include: infectious, nutritional, endocrine, and metabolic conditions. Prerequisite: ANSC B80 and B82. Hours: 30 lect. CCS: Occupational Education. Not Transferable: Associate Degree only.

Intended to instruct students with required knowledge of pharmacological and biological agents used in veterinary medicine, including calculations, classifications, action, and methods of administration, dispensing and labeling. FDA, USDA, and DEA guidelines regarding restricted and scheduled drugs, as they relate to small animals and residue avoidance in food animals will be discussed. Prerequisite: ANSC B80 and B82. Hours: 30 lect. CCS: Occupational Education. Not Transferable: Associate Degree only.

Instruction in the identification and care of instruments, the importance of asepsis and sterilization techniques, surgical pack preparation, and draping techniques. Instruction of surgical and dental procedures and procedures for general and local anesthesia for veterinary medicine will be covered. Prerequisite: ANSC B80 and B82. Hours: 30 lect. CCS: Occupational Education. Not Transferable: Associate Degree only.

Provides the student with knowledge of emergency procedures for veterinary technicians, including client management, triage, supportive therapy, medicine, and surgery for the peracutely ill patient. Nursing procedures as they relate to emergency and non-emergency care will be presented, including bandaging, splinting, casting, and fluid therapy, Prerequisite: ANSC B80 and B82. Hours: 36 lect. CCS: Occupational Education. Not Transferable: Associate Degree only.

Includes lectures in microbiology, parasitology, cytology, urinalysis, hematology, serology, and pathology. The student will be instructed in normal and abnormal test values. Covers the understanding, reading and application of specific test results. Also covers specimen handling and necropsy techniques. Prerequisite: ANSC B80 and B82. Hours: 36 lect. Covers anatomy, physiology, disease descriptions, and identification of caged birds, laboratory, and exotic animals. Instruction in restraint, physical examination, anesthesia, surgery, specimen collection, species identification, and the legal ramifications of owning exotic animals. Prerequisite: ANSC B80 and B82.
