3 hours total Th e Un i t e d St a t e s Co n s t i t u t i o n examination is available to those teacher credential candidates who have a deficiency in the American political and constitutional component of their credential program. Students enrolling in this course are referred by credential programs. The examination covers the history, principles, and provisions of the United States Constitution. Students who do not wish to submit to this examination may enroll in Political Science 101, American Political Institutions.

This course is designed to develop an understanding of basic nutrition for healthy individuals and an appreciation of the relationship between sound nutritional food patterns and physical, mental, and emotional health. 1 unit 18 hours total Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 099 and READ 099. Survey course designed to study areas of research and controversy in the field of nutrition. Focus of this component will be the study of sports nutrition, nutrition and cardiovascular disease, nutrition and weight management, megavitamin therapy and fast food eating. (CSU, AVC)

3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisites: Eligibility for ENGL 101, READ 099, and MATH 060. This course is designed to develop an understanding of the special nutritional needs for those participating in regular physical activity, both individual and team sports. Nutrient and fluid intake before, during and after exercise or sports competition will also be examined. Discussion on the current research on performance-enhancing aids will also be explored. 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 101 and READ 099. Study of culture and home life of varying populations. The study of each culture begins with a history of the group in its native environment then moves to its history and current demographics in the United States. Worldview (outlook on life) is then studied: including religion, gender expectations, family structure and traditional health practices. Immigrant influence on American cooking, as well as impact on the health care system, will be analyzed and compared. Course includes sampling of food characteristic to the cultures studied. The course will encourage self-examination and individual cultural identification as well as cultural bias of the student. It expands attitudes toward diversity and is essential for health care providers, food service professionals, dietitians and nutritionist. (CSU, AVC)

It provides access to the nursing skills lab to help students practice nursing interventions and master learning objectives related to skills.

4 units (32 hours lecture, 96 hours clinic) (8 weeks) Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to ADN Program. Prerequisite: Completion of NS 101 with a grade of "C" or better. Course is based on Orem's Self-Care Theory as applied to the care of women from the age of menarche throughout the life span. The concept that each patient should be involved as much as possible in the decisions and activities connected with their own health maintenance and restoration, and with the child-bearing processes is presented. The course provides theory and guided clinical practice to promote an understanding of normal and pathophysiological processes in relation to women and their health; the self-care practices and nursing actions which promote health and well-being of women and newborns; self-care practices that support a developmental environment for the growing fetus and neonate; and self-care practices and nursing actions that prevent deleterious effects from pathological conditions and events related to sexuality, the female reproductive system, and childbearing. The supportive educative role of the nurse is emphasized with the goal of fostering the self-care agency of each patient. (CSU, AVC)

This course is based on Orem's Self- Care Theory as applied to the care of patients with chronic illness. The concept that the patient should be involved as much as possible in the decisions and activities connected with their own health maintenance, restoration, and prevention of complications is presented. The course provides theory and clinical practice to develop an understanding of the pathophysiology of chronic diseases. The student learns self-care practices and nursing actions which promote health and well-being, provide a developmental environment for patients' continued development, and prevent harmful effects of either the illness or the health state requirements for the illness. The student is taught teaching/learning theory in order to perform the supportive/educative role of the nurse. (CSU, AVC)
