Introduction to the Earth's geologic features and processes responsible for their formation. Topics include minerals, rocks, volcanos, structures, faults, earthquakes, continental drift, streams, groundwater, glaciers, ocean basins, shorelines, and fossil fuels. [CAN GEOL 6] (CSU, UC, AVC)

    1 unit 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 099, and Eligibility for MATH 070. Physical Geology Laboratory provides students with hands-on introduction to the analyses and identification of common minerals and rocks. The class provides an introduction to the analysis and interpretation of topographic and geologic maps. Historical Geology is an overview of the history and development of the Earth and life on Earth. The course will examine the geologic processes that have shaped the Earth, the development of the Earth and life on Earth, and how it has changed over time according to the geologic record.     5 units 5 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 101 and READ 099. Introduction to speaking, reading, writing and aural comprehension of German. Emphasis is on the vocabulary, grammar and cultural knowledge necessary to communicate in everyday situations. The course includes work in pairs and small groups so that students will be active learners. This course is equivalent to GER 101A and 101B combined. This course, the second semester of elementary-level German, continues to develop students' ability to speak, read, write and comprehend German. Emphasis is on the vocabulary, grammar and cultural knowledge necessary to communicate in everyday situations. The course includes work in pairs and small groups so that students will be active learners. This course is equivalent to GER 102A and 102B combined.     2 units 4 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of GER 101. This course is designed for students with an elementary knowledge of German who want to improve their conversational ability by improving oral comprehension, fluency and pronunciation and by increasing vocabulary. Students will spend most of their time conversing with other students in pairs or small groups. Class will be conducted entirely in German. This course is not designed for students with no previous knowledge of German. (CSU, AVC)

    2 units 4 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of GER 110 or concurrent enrollment in GER 102. This course is designed for students with an elementary knowledge of German who want to improve their conversational ability by improving oral comprehension, fluency and pronunciation and by increasing vocabulary. Students will spend most of their time conversing with other students in pairs or small groups. Class will be conducted entirely in German. This course builds upon the knowledge and skills learned in GER 110 and parallels much of the vocabulary and grammatical structures covered in GER 102 in order to allow students to develop conversational fluency.     3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of GER 102 or 102B. This course will develop students' reading, writing, aural comprehension and speaking abilities to an intermediate level. A variety of texts will be read and discussed. Students may also hear radio emissions, video or television clips, songs and short lectures. Several contemporary issues such as environmental problems, the work world, the educational system, music, feminism, multiculturalism or political history will be covered. Class work includes reading aloud, discussion, and work in groups or pairs. The course is conducted entirely in German and is intended for German majors, students studying literature or linguistics or other subjects that require more than two semesters of a foreign language or those seeking to broaden or maintain their proficiency in German.     3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of GER 201. Course continues to develop students' ability to read, write, speak and comprehend German. Students will read and discuss intermediate literary and nonliterary texts. Grammar will be reviewed as necessary through brief lectures and exercises. Major twentieth century German authors will be introduced through reading and discussion of short stories. The course will be conducted entirely in German. [CAN GERM 10] (CSU, UC, AVC)
