The course covers writing anxiety, the writing process, audience and purpose, clarity, development, and organizational strategies. This course is intended for students in courses of all levels who need focused review on basic writing skills. The student's strengths and weaknesses will be assessed and a learning plan will be developed to meet the student's individual needs. Students will increase the number of words they know and use; make full use of the dictionary; determine the correct pronunciation of words; infer the meaning of words using context clues, base words and affixes; differentiate words that are pronounced the same or similarly. This course is intended for students in all courses who wish to develop a college-level vocabulary. NOTE: No grade will be given for this class; student will receive "pass" or "npass" only. Students will learn how to use spelling rules; spell consonant and vowel sounds in words; avoid spelling errors caused by faulty pronunciations; proofread to correct spelling errors; locate correct spellings of words in the dictionary; use the apostrophe and hyphen; capitalize and abbreviate words. This course is intended for students in all courses who wish to improve their spelling ability. NOTE: No grade will be given for this class; student will receive "pass" or "npass" only. 3 units 3 hours weekly This course will focus on writing grammatically correct and properly punctuated sentences, writing a variety of sentence structures, correcting fragments and incorrect sentences, and producing well developed and coherently organized paragraphs. This course is designed to prepare students for developmental composition courses and strengthen overall writing skills. NOTE: No grade will be given for this class; student will receive "pass" or "no pass" only. (Credcourse not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.)

4 units 4 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 097 (AVC assessment), or Completion of ENGL 095. Advisory: Completion of ESL 058, or Eligibility for READ 097 (AVC assessment). Aimed at the developing writer, this course teaches reading and writing skills essential for producing clear, competent expository prose. Special emphasis is placed on paragraph development, the organization of ideas, the composition of short essays (2-3 pages, typed), the drafting and revision process, and syntactical, grammatical, and mechanical correctness. Students read and write extensively. NOTE: No grade will be given for this class; student will receive "pass" or "no pass" only. (Credit cournot applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.)

4 units 4 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 099 (AVC assessment) or Completion of ENGL 097. Advisory: Eligibility for READ 099 (AVC assessment). This course reviews basic writing techniques and expands on those skills essential for producing clear, competent, and developed expository prose that exhibits critical thinking. Emphasis is placed on the process of writing, the development of a thesis, paragraph organization and development, a clearly defined essay structure, correct sentence structure and variety, and correct use of grammar and mechanics. Included is a limited approach to academic research and an introduction to the use of MLA (Modern Language Association) documentation. Students read and write extensively. NOTE: No grade will be given for this class; student will receive "pass" or "no pass" only. (Credit cournot applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.)
