    3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of ENGL 101. T h i s c o u r s e i s a n a n a l y s i s o f communication in terms of gender. Feminine ve rba l and non-ve rba l c o m m u n i c a t i o n p a t t e r n s w i l l b e compared and contrasted with masculine communication patterns. Students will examine how society, media, and culture influence gender. Further, the communication of women from various non-dominant cultures within the United States will be examined. Issues of sexism, sexual harassment, and racism will be explored. (CSU, UC, AVC)

    3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 101. The course deals with the analysis of cultural factors in communication. The communication of various nondominant cultures within the United States (African- Americans, Hispanics, Asian-Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, women, the disabled, lesbians and homosexuals) will be examined and compared to the communication of the dominant culture. International communication, with regard to the global village, will also be addressed. Diversity will be celebrated and issues of racism, sexism, and other prejudices will be discussed.     3.5 units 5 hours weekly (3 hours lecture, 2 hours lab) Instructional materials fee required for this course and must be paid at registration. Basic skill level course for students w i t h o u t a n y p r e v i o u s s e w i n g experience. Designed to prepare the student for a college-level beginning clothing construction class. Students will study basic safety in the classroom as well as sewing machine parts, care, and maintenance. Students learn basic beginning sewing techniques by constructing three simple projects (tote bag and two garments) and developing a basic notebook. NOTE: No grade will be given for this class; student will receive "pass" or "no pass" only. (Credit cournot applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.) ( R1)

    3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading, ENGL 101 and MATH 070. Study of creation, production, marketing and merchandising of fashion and fabric. Emphasis placed on consumer influences, acceptance and forecasting of fashion as they relate to manufacturing and merchandising product lines. History of fashion evolution along with international and domestic design centers are included. Overview of textile products, trims development and marketing will also be covered. Introduction to promotion and advertising of retail fashion along with an overview of employment opportunities in all areas of fashion and textile industry will be included. (CSU, AVC)

    3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 101. The psychology of clothing selection. Emphasis is placed on the study of design, line and color as they relate to personal appearance and dressing for the job. Fashion vocabulary, recognition and description of styles, fashion cycles and trends are included. An overview and introduction to employment opportunities, job interviewing and résumé preparationwill also be covered. Students will plan and participate in the annual fashion show. Required for all Clothing and Textile and Interior Design majors. (CSU, AVC)

    3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 101. The study of the characteristics of plant, animal, and synthetic fibers and their use in fabrics. The course includes information for the student concerning textile weaves and finishes, and the selection and care of fabrics for garments and household use. This course is suggested for prospective homemakers, home economics majors, and those interested in the interior decorating and clothing industries. [CAN FCS 6] (CSU, UC, AVC)

    3.5 units 5 hours weekly (3 hours lecture, 2 hours lab) Advisory: Completion of CT 050, and Eligibility for READ 097 and MATH 050. A beginning college level sewing class. Students will review sewing machine parts, care and preventable maintenance. Students will be introduced to a variety of clothing construction techniques including seams, seam finishes and hems. Facings, sleeves, collar, buttonholes, zipper and waistband applications will be covered during the semester. Students will construct four garments (shell, skirt, blouse and reversible vest). Emphasis will be on commercial patterns and fitting methods. Required for Clothing and Textile majors. [CAN FCS 10] (CSU, AVC) ( R1)

    3.5 units 5 hours weekly (3 hours lecture, 2 hours lab) Prerequisite: Completion of CT 110. Advisory: Eligibility for READ 097 and MATH 050. Intermediate clothing construction techniques to increase skill level in garment construction of men's and women's pants. Students will develop a basic pant sloper from a basic pant pattern. Two additional pair of pants will be designed and constructed from the sloper. Required for all Clothing and Textile majors. (CSU, AVC) ( R3)

    3.5 units 5 hours weekly (3 hours lecture, 2 hours lab) Prerequisite: Completion of CT 110. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 097, READ 097 and MATH 050. This course is designed to meet the skills, needs and demands for instruction, techniques and selection of men's and women's speed tailored jackets and/or coats. Students will fit and construct both a lined and unlined jacket. This course extends and enriches current course offerings in clothing construction. This course is required for all Clothing and Textile majors. (CSU, AVC) ( R3)

    3.5 units 5 hours weekly (3 hours lecture, 2 hours lab) Advisory: Eligibility for READ 097 and MATH 050. An introductory course covering the operation and maintenance of a serger/ overlock machine. Threading for the three thread, four thread, and five thread serger/overlock will be demonstrated. Maintenance and needle types for different operations will be covered. Tension setting for a variety of thread weights and types will be included. A technique notebook will be developed to demonstrate the construction techniques and terms for the variety of basic serger operations. Five basic serged garments will be constructed during the class. This class is recommended for both the home sewer and the student who is seeking a career in the clothing industry. It is designed to meet the minimum entry level qualifications for clothing occupations. This class is required for the clothing and textiles majors. All students are required to supply their own serger for the class. ( CSU, AVC) ( R1)
