    Medical-Surgical Nursing II provides a study of adult patients with well-defined health problems involving alteration of body regulation and integration, body defenses, gastric absorption, elimination, and musculoskeletal functions. The nursing process is utilized to formulate nursing care plans and to apply theoretical knowledge to patient situations. Expected outcomes of nursing intervention are evaluated. Correlation of theory and clinical is provided on medical-surgical units in community facilities. Prerequisites: NURS 1134, BIOL 2214, and BIOL 2224.

    Gerontological Nursing provides evidence-based theory and practice concepts in the care of the older client. This course is intended to familiarize the RN student with health care issues for the client who is 65 years or older. Core concepts include critical thinking, therapeutic communication, ethical/legal issues, cultural concepts, community resources, assessment techniques, nutritional needs, delegation, prioritization, and collaboration while caring for the older client. Prerequisites: NURS 1107 or current LPN or RN license.

    Pediatric Nursing enhances the student's knowledge of children and their families, thereby expanding his or her role in developing the unique skills required to assess, analyze, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care of children. Emphasis is placed on supporting children and families during normal growth and development sequences as well as nursing care of the ill and/or disabled child. Concepts of communication, teaching-learning, legal aspects, cultural diversity, nutrition, and accountability are discussed in relation to adaptive and maladaptive responses of children. Clinical experiences include observation and care of children in community and acute care settings. Prerequisites: NURS 2104, BIOL 2214, BIOL 2224, and PSYC 2103.

    Medical-Surgical Nursing III provides a study of adult patients experiencing welldefined stressors related to alterations in gaseous transport, cardiovascular functions, sensory activity, genitourinary functions, and human sexuality. In addition to strengthening the role of the Associate Degree Nurse as a provider of care through the use of the nursing process, this course emphasizes the role as manager of groups of patients. The clinical experience is designed to provide the student with opportunities for self-growth in nursing and to encourage the beginning transition from student to professional nurse. The clinical experience is provided on medical-surgical nursing units in community hospitals and other agencies as appropriate. Prerequisites: NURS 2104 and 2114.

    Nursing Process I introduces the LPN to basic concepts, attitudes, knowledge, and skills of the registered nurse, thereby facilitating the role transition from licensed practical nurse to registered nurse. The philosophy, conceptual framework, and objectives of Northark's Nursing Department are introduced. Utilizing an integrated approach and building upon the foundation of fundamental nursing knowledge and skills, the nursing process, human functioning health alterations, wellness-illness, stages of the life cycle, stress-adaptation, communication, and professional ethics are explored for individuals of all age groups. The nursing process is used to focus on needs of individuals responding to stressors related to the following concepts: mental health, nutrition, pharmacology, fluid and electrolytes, obstetrics, gaseous transport, sensorimotor, body defense mechanisms, perioperative, and growth and development. Clinical laboratory experience is in the nursing laboratory and in health agencies, providing the student opportunities to develop nursing skills by giving direct patient care. Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of PN program.

    Nursing Process II is a 10-week summer course that builds on Nursing Process I. The student utilizes knowledge of the nursing process to study individuals with well-defined stressors. Continuing with the integrated approach, the following concepts are explored for individuals of all ages: gaseous transport, mental health, and obstetrics. Clinical laboratory experience is in the nursing laboratory and in health agencies providing the student opportunities to develop nursing skills by giving direct patient care. Prerequisites: NURS 2159, NURS 1011.

    Nursing Process III continues Nursing Process I and II. The student continues to build on knowledge and skills continuing with the integrated approach. The following concepts are explored for individuals of all ages: human sexuality, metabolism, body defense mechanisms, sensorimotor, mental health, and emergent and critical care. Clinical laboratory experience is in the nursing laboratory and health agencies, providing the student opportunities to develop nursing skills by giving direct patient care. Prerequisite: NURS 2167, NURS 2031.

    Nursing Perspectives surveys nursing history and presents current issues, problems, and emerging trends. Concepts explored include legal aspects, ethical issues, professional organizations, and role transitions from LPN to RN. Responsibilities of the registered nurse and management related to the delivery of direct care are included in this theory course.

    This course teaches new students the study skills which are necessary for success in college level study. Some of the skills which are learned and practiced by the students include library research, efficient note taking, test preparation, test-taking techniques, and effective methods for studying textbook chapters. In addition, students learn to use the college catalog and complete several interest and ability inventories which help them decide on majors which are best suited to their strengths.
