The course will explore the dynamics of Criminal Law and its development from English common law into an elaborate system of Federal, State, and Local laws based on Codes, Statutes, Judicial case law and Common Law and its function in society. The course will help students develop a basic understanding of the nature and definitions of Crimes and resulting Prosecution and Punishments in our constitutional democracy.

    The course familiarizes students with Arrest and Seizure Procedures, the Penal Code, Evidence Law, Controlled Substance Law, Domestic Violence Law, and, finally Juvenile Law and Procedure. Fundamentals of Criminal Law II and also introduce the students to existing legal resources used to find statues, rules, ordinances and case law.

    Students in this course study the nature of and foundation principles of ethics. They will study internal anti external factors which might induce unethical behavior in police officers. They will learn to identify the Continuum of Compromise and study the relationship of stresses of the job and the ability to make ethical decision in their careers. They will study the five ethical standards by which officers are judged and explore the five Pillars of Character. Finally, students will engage in a detailed study of the Police Code of Ethics.

    This course will cover the duties and responsibilities of the patrol divisions of law enforcement agencies.. The organization, operation and effectiveness of patrol will be examined and evaluated. The student will become familiar with the various methods departments use to accomplish the patrol mission such as team policing, heat plans, etc. The course will investigate such topics as: Patrol Goals and Objectives, Patrol Environment, Patrol Hazards, Violence and the Police, Occupational Stress and Community Relations.

    This compact course arms the student with all the essential Spanish words and phrases needed to perform the job of a law enforcement officer. More importantly, it will present these words and phrases in the context of dozens of real-life scenarios--from a traffic accident to a criminal trespass, from a homicide to a disturbing the peace call. No previous Spanish language experience required.

    This course is designed to present to the student the theory and practice of investigation through application of deductive and inductive reasoning. Various techniques of investigation will be reviewed in a practical and theoretical sense, linking these methods to: 1) the crime scene, 2) physical evidence collection, 3) injury and death investigation, 4) burglary investigation, 5) rules of evidence, and 6) interviews and interrogation techniques. The purpose of the course is to acquaint the law enforcement student with proven methods of investigation, and to create an awareness of the problematic nature of investigation; in particular those problems that involve the cooperation of other agencies of the criminal justice system.

    This course will help the student recruit to be able to get on-the-job training and provide a venue for putting into practice the theories and procedures which has been learned during the course of the Law Enforcement Program. The first phase of this internship is completed by shadowing an patrol officer. The second phase is a solo assignment in which the recruit is supervised by the Field Training Officer Program Commander and his/her Command Supervisor.
