This course concerns the care and prevention of equine athletic injuries and instructs the student in the use of the agents of physical rehabilitation, such as heat and cold, massage, electrical stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound, photon therapy and therapeutic laser, and magnetic fields. Additionally, the physical process of injury and healing are presented. The student will have the opportunity for hands-on practice applying therapeutic agents during class time. Hands-on experiences will include human application as well as equine application to provide the student with first hand experience of the physical agent as well as verbal feedback about the effects of the agent. Two of the lab experiences are held in the barn to apply techniques learned to horses. A class presentation of library research acquaints the student with rehabilitation literature. Prerequisite: Consent of the Director of the Equine Therapy Program.
