This course provides grounding in the history of the therapeutic professions, ethics and legal documentation, and professional communication skills. Additionally, the course introduces the concepts and principles of therapeutic care. The students will be taught the basics of equine body language, bandaging techniques, and gait evaluation. Therapeutic skills include the application of heat and cold, massage, stretching and therapeutic exercise. Students may observe activities at local veterinary clinics. Prerequisite: Consent of the director of the Equine Therapy Program.

Normal and abnormal horse behaviors, including stereotypes will be discussed in this course. Students will learn how behavior affects the raising, training, and management of horses. Behaviors explored will include: communicative, ingestive, sexual, social, aggressive, and abnormal behaviors. The evolution of the horse, its relationship with the environment and how this explains actions and reactions of the horse will also he explored. Prerequisite: EQS 215 (formerly numbered EQS 205). Designated critical thinking.

Study of the duties and responsibilities of horse industry office personnel. Office organization, billing and related record-keeping are examined. Prerequisite: EQS 205, junior standing or permission of instructor.

This course focuses on the distribution of various forage crops and their adaptations to soil and climate. Also discussed are seeding rates and mixtures, productivity and pest control. Prerequisites: BIO 102 or equivalent and EQS 215 (formerly numbered EQS 205).

This is a practical equine nutrition course, designed specifically for students interested in management positions. Identification and use of feed grains, forages, supplemental feeds, and additives will be discussed. Students will learn how to calculate moisture contents and cost per unit. Factors influencing feed quality, feed value, price and storage will be discussed. Digestive anatomy, digestion ration formulation for various classes of horses, and feed processing methods will also be discussed. Included in this course will be discussion of feed related problems. Prerequisite: EQS 215 (formerly numbered EQS 205). Designated professional studies.

A study of feeds and formulation of rations; fats, carbohydrates, proteins and their digestion; the role of minerals and vitamins in nutrition; common horse feeding practices; and problems associated with feeding. Prerequisites: EQS 215 (formerly numbered EQS 205) and CHEM 170.

This course is a study of the anatomy and physiology of reproduction in the stallion and mare in relationship to teasing, breeding and foaling, semen collection, insemination and evaluation, and daily record-keeping Prerequisite: EQS 215 (formerly numbered EQS 205).
