This course is designed for students with previous experience in western equitation. Includes a review of elementary horsemanship (western) techniques; handling horse properly from ground; grooming, tacking-up; more advanced riding skills such as leg aids, rein aids and canter leads. Prerequisite: Grade of "B" or higher in EQS 116 or consent of instructor.

This course reviews and builds on western horsemanship skills developed in EQS 203. Emphasis includes different western riding styles, the use of various bits and training devices, show preparation and strategies, and intermediate riding patterns. Prerequisite: Grade of "B" or higher in EQS 203 or consent of instructor.

A series of mini-courses rotating in a two-year sequence covering topics related to equine farm management. Topics may include: equine marketing, the racing industry, equine research, equine taxes and laws, and equine insurance.

This course is a continuation of EQS 204. It is designed for students with previous experience in hunt seat equitation and jumping. The course content includes instruction of the correct basic position and application of natural and artificial aids. Topics that will be covered include: essential requirements of horse care, a general study of the anatomy and physiology of the horse, diseases and disease control, primary emergency care, basic nutrition and common feeding practices, behavior and horse handling, and basic horse facility management. Prerequisites: Admission to the Equine Assisted Learning Certificate Program, non-equine major, or consent of the instructor. Designated critical thinking.

This course is a general study of the anatomy and physiology of the horse, the relationship of form to function, horse selection, horse breeding and feeding. This course includes a laboratory. Prerequisite: EQS 165. Designated professional studies.

This course introduces the various types of fences used in building both hunter/stadium courses and cross country courses. The design of hunter courses, medal finals courses, jumper courses, stadium courses, and cross country courses, arena size, level of competitors, appropriateness of jumps, distances between fences and building jumps for the different areas in course design will also be covered. Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor.

This is a practical equine nutrition course, designed specifically for students interested in management positions. Identification and use of feed grains, forages, supplemental feeds, and additives will be discussed. Students will learn how to calculate moisture contents and cost per unit. Factors influencing feed quality, feed value, price and storage will be discussed. Digestive anatomy, digestion ration formulation for various classes of horses, and feed processing methods will also be discussed. Included in this course will be discussion of feed related problems. Prerequisite: EQS 215 (formerly numbered EQS 205).

This course is study of the fundamentals of horseshoeing including the basic use of farrier tools. Also includes trimming hooves and descriptions of fitting and nailing on shoes and normal and corrective shoeing. Prerequisite: EQS 215 (formerly numbered EQS 205).
