    This course explores a variety of materials and processes common to Sculpture. Topics include hands-on projects expanding on 3D design concepts and encourage the development of sound ideation and sculpture process. The class presents contemporary trends and applications as well as cultural traditions found throughout history. Coursework includes hands-on learning opportunities in Century's FAB LAB.     This course introduces basic hand-building and wheel techniques with clay. Topics include the diverse cultural history of ceramic art and its continued relevance as a form of creative expression. The principles of 3D design, along with functional and non-functional applications, are explored through a series of hands-on exercises and projects.     Independent study is an opportunity for intermediate and advanced art students to complete an in-depth project or body of work in studio art or art-related research. This coure requires students to have completed all or most Art courses offered at Century College or provide proof (transcripts or portfolio) of completing college-level foundation art courses. This course requires project to be approved prior to enrollment. Prerequisite(s): Instructor and dean consent. Recommendation(s): This course is intended for students who are planning to major in studio art, art history, or art education.

    This course surveys the works of artists throughout the world who have explored and defined the aesthetic boundaries of photography from the medium's invention to the present. The history of photography is presented in terms of technological developments, social trends, and personal expression. Lectures and reading assignments focus on contextualizing photographs in order to reveal their historic significance, content, and aesthetic form. Class discussions and writing assignments introduce students to the basic methodological approaches to analyzing images. Prerequisite(s): ENGL 1020 with a grade of C or higher OR ENGL 1021 with a grade of C or higher.

    This course challenges students to consider different ways that traditional photographic processes can be used to communicate ideas. Topics include the refining of film camera and darkroom skills, and introductions to the tools, applications, and creative methods used in making alternative, and non-silver photographic images. Other activities include critiques, discussions of the history of photography and contemporary trends in art, and reading and writing assignments. Assignments are designed to help students evaluate, interpret, and express ideas using the camera and light sensitive materials. A group field trip to a major metro area art venue is typically required. Prerequisite(s): ART 1031 with a grade of C or higher

    This course integrates aesthetic and technical challenges and strengthens visual problem- solving skills using the medium of digital photography. This class builds on the basics of digital cameras image editing software, and digital printing processes. Projects address a range of design, aesthetic, and conceptual issues fundamental to the art of digital photography. Strong emphasis is on the strengthening of both a technical foundation and a critical awareness of the medium as a creative tool. Prerequisite(s): ART 1031 with a grade of C or higher

    This course expands and refines concepts covered in Foundation Drawing I. Additional topics include thematic intent and deeper investigation into the impact of composition and the properties of a variety of wet and dry materials, including color. Projects and exercises are based on direct observation of still life, the human form, architectural spaces, and nature. Coursework includes cultural/historical research and considers a range of contemporary professional applications. Open studio hours are available for outside class work if needed.     This course expands on the foundational concepts presented in Introduction to Painting. Emphasis is placed on traditional and experimental approaches to painting using water-based oils. Topics include explorations of themes based on landscape, interior spaces, still life, and the human form. Painting assignments are supported by sketchbook exercises, readings, discussions, and research of historic, cultural, and contemporary painting issues.     This course is an expansion of concepts covered in Introduction to Ceramics. Topics and lessons are designed to expand technical skills and design concepts in levels of greater complexity. Coursework includes functional and nonfunctional applications, glazing techniques, effects and functions of various clay bodies, firing procedures, and studio safety. In addition, the course includes the diverse history of ceramic art and pottery, including contemporary trends and movements. Prerequisite(s): ART 1071 with a grade of C or higher Recommendation(s): ART 1025
