This course covers pathophysiology, phamacology and nutrition as related to body systems. This will include signs, symptoms and etiology of pathology as well as appropriate drug uses, effects, dangers and precautions as well as routes of administration, dilutions and calculations, management and control. Students will review common prescription abbreviations, forms of medications and basic drug categories.

This course will develop basic laboratory skills. Emphasis will be placed on lab safety, proper use of personal protective equipment, collection of patient blood specimens, order of the draw, and processing for testing. Various methods of collection will be taught and practiced. Students will be expected to participate both as a phlebotomist and as a patient.

Pre-requisite: American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR. This course develops basic clinical and laboratory skills. Emphasis will be placed on lab safety and proper usage of personal protective equipment. Course topics include patient preparation and care, managing diagnostic testing, electrocardiography and pulmonary function testing.

This course covers clinical duties that are performed by the medical assistant. Emphasis will be on medical and surgical asepsis, assisting with procedures, taking patient histories, assisting with physical examinations, pharmacology, administering medications, calculating dosages, patient screening using established protocols and documenting findings. Students will learn how to obtain appropriate information through effective communication.

This course is designed to introduce the student to clinical laboratory. Basic aspects of laboratory safety, use and maintenance of laboratory equipment, quality controls, urinalysis, hematology, serology, and chemistry and microbiology will be covered in theory and simulated labs.

This course covers the continued study of clinical medical assisting. Included in this course are minor emergency care and assisting in the primary care areas of women's health, prenatal care and obstetrics, pediatrics, men's health, and orthopedics.

2.00 Credits
This course covers common disease conditions affecting individual body systems including signs, symptoms, etiology of disease, diagnostic measures and treatment options. Nutrition and how the body uses nutrients, as well as the relationship between diet, health and disease, also will be discussed.

This course teaches an overview of basic medical office skills including filing medical records, medical appointments, telephone techniques, and billing. Students will also learn basic principles of medical insurance, insurance forms, and coding.

This course will cover legal and ethical issues as they relate to the medical field. The importance of legal knowledge to medical office personnel, standard of care, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), negligence, malpractice, informed consent, advance healthcare directives, palliative care, stages of grief, and bioethical issues as they relate to the medical field represent some of the topics that will be discussed.
