MCS 2230: Multicultural America
3.00 Credits
Minnesota State Community and Technical College
Meets MNTC Goal Area 7. Prerequisite: An entering student should be open-minded and willing to explore formal and informal education of African Americans, American Indians, and Latinos. Awareness of and sensitivity to other cultural groups is beneficial. This course is designed to offer future educators and citizens a perspective on the enculturation and formal education of four key groups within the larger United States society: African Americans, American Indians, Asian Americans, and Latinos. A number of themes, such as identity, coming of age, and the value of tradition, will be explored with relation to these groups. Particular attention is given to how one learns to belong to a culture (enculturation) and how this may differ from assimilation as experienced in formal and informal systems of schooling. The readings for this course are chosen to provide a context for understanding these experiences both through texts, by having members of multicultural America speak for themselves, and through service learning experiences.
