Credits: 4 Prerequisite: none This course is the entry level language class. Beginning level vocabulary groupings (examples: pastimes, family, time, clothing, foods) will be used for elementary conversations. Grammar will include present tense of regular verbs, stemchangers, present progressive, irregulars, reflexives and some idiomatic constructs. Regular preterite tense introduced, if possible. Graded level readings are used for comprehension and speaking development as well as short writing assignments for practicing vocabulary and grammar constructs. Transfer Curriculum Goal(s): none

Credits: 4 Prerequisite: none This course is a continuation of SPAN 1501. Basic vocabulary groupings will be added (examples: town, travel, politics, as per text) at a broader and more diverse topic level. Short readings related to Spanish-speaking countries are introduced as pronunciation and comprehension exercises. Grammar and vocabulary is practiced through short essay and oral class participation. Credits: 4 Prerequisite: none This course is a review of the fundamentals of grammar and vocabulary covered in the first year (or years) of study with a more advanced construction of the language. All of the verb tenses will now be introduced in reading, writing and speaking. Upper level readings will denote Spanish cultural differences, art, music, politics and current events. Written and oral expressions demonstrate the comprehension of graded level readings. SPAN 1502 or equivalent recommended. Transfer Curriculum Goal(s): 8

Credits: 2 Prerequisite: none This course follows SPAN 2401 in sequence of grammar acquisition. Emphasis is given on practice and review of all the verb tenses, in combination with the vocabulary acquired at this level. Special concentration on the advanced forms of perfect, conditional, subjunctives and clauses will be studied. Vocabulary and language structures will reflect upper level constructs. Credits: 2 Prerequisite: equivalent of two or more years (h.s.) This course is the compliment/ completion of SPAN 2402. It is designed to promote communication in the target language. Graded - level readers provide reading practice, grammar review, vocabulary building and cultural reference. Role play, videos, newspapers, magazines and native speaker guests serve as a basis for class discussion, enhance reading, listening and comprehension skills. SPAN 2402 or equivalent recommended. By studying the roots (Aztec, Toltec, Olmec) through the Spanish colonization (Cortés - Santa Anna), U.S. /Mexican relations (The Alamo to THE WALL), we arrive at the present with a better understanding of today's economical, political and sociological interrelationship.
