Provides a fundamental study of respiratory physiology and related anatomy, including an introduction to renal function, acid base balance, and hemodynamic measurements. This course is required for respiratory and polysomnography program majors, but is open to other health or science majors.

This course introduces the profession of respiratory care. Content includes the professional and regulatory agencies that govern practice; legal issues and communication in the clinical setting; medical record documentation; gas laws that govern respiratory care modalities, and the physiologic basis for medical gas, humidity and aerosol therapy; and, bronchopulmonary hygiene.

This course builds on the principles of basic respiratory care by presenting more complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Content includes bronchopulmonary hygiene, clinical laboratory data, airway management, and an introduction to mechanical ventilation.

Presents the general principles of pharmacology and action of the major respiratory drugs. In addition, the anatomy and physiology of the autonomic nervous system and its role in drug action will be covered. Drugs will be studied as groups and individually for site and mechanism of action, contraindications and side effects, clinical uses and routes of administration.

An introductory course in the pathology and treatment of those diseases and injuries that impair cardiorespiratory function. The role of the respiratory therapist in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabiitaton of the patient, as well as the ability to work within the parameters of a Therapist Driven Protocol (TDP) and to develop a care plan is emphasized.

This course introduces the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures used in the delivery of respiratory care services. Content includes medical gas therapy, humidity and aerosol therapy, basic patient assessment, principles of infection control and an introduction to basic airway management.

This course continues study of the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures used in the delivery of respiratory care services. Content includes bronchpulmonary hygiene, arterial blood gas sampling, artificial airways, and mechanical ventilation. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking and decision-making skills.

This course introduces students to the clinical environment and the practice of respiratory care. Clinical competencies include communication with the patient and members of the health care team; patient assessment; use of the medical record, and respiratory care procedures for the medical/surgical patient. This course meets 8 hours/week for the final 8 weeks of the semester. PLEASE NOTE: CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information), CHRI (Criminal Records Central Repository) and/or SORI (Sex Offender Record Information) checks are required prior to participation in this course.

This clinical course provides students with direct patient care experience in pulmonary function testing, airway management, arterial blood sampling, analysis and interpretation, and the use of respiratory care protocols. The course includes an introductory rotation in the initiation and monitoring of mechanical support of oxygenation and ventilation. PLEASE NOTE: CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information), CHRI (Criminal Records Central Repository) and/or SORI (Sex Offender Record Information) checks are required prior to participation in this course.
