Course objectives include understanding the formal structures of comics, analyzing the visual grammar of the medium, and exploring issues such as immigration, racism, war and terrorism, relationships, and gender identity. Both celebrated mainstream graphic novels and those that challenge the conventions of the genre will be assigned.
