Presents the general principles of pharmacology and the major drugs used in an emergency setting. Topics include cardiovascular, respiratory, analgesic,gastrointestinal, antibiotic and CNS medications, as well as the indications, contraindications and side effects. Routes of administration are taught during the laboratory session.

Topics include advanced patient assessment techniques; establishing and maintaining an airway; caring for the emotionally disturbed patent; obstetrical and gynecological emergencies; and pediatric medial emergencies. Emphasis is placed on the EMT-P working as a team member, and identifying the limitations of paramedicine in the emergency medical setting.

Management of trauma, including assessment skills and managing patients with shock, unstable airways, injuries to the extremities, burns, and spinal injuries.

Management of patients with cardiovascular disease or who experience catastrophic cardiovascular events. Includes cardiac monitoring, acquiring and interpreting a 12-lead EKG, cardiac pharmacological intervention, and the use of electrical therapies in the treatment of cardiac dysrhythmias.

Provides the student with an opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge learned in the classroom and laboratory in a supervised clinical setting. Rotations include the emergency department, or, OB, ICU/CCU, pediatrics, and psych. Requires 240 experiential hours. Must be currently enrolled in the EMT-program in order to participate. Please note: CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) and/or SORI (Sex Offender Record Information) and/or CHRI (Criminal Record Central Repository) checks are required prior to participation in this course. 2.00 Credits
Provides the student with an opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge learned in the classroom and laboratory into ambulance transport under supervision. Requires 120 experiential hours. Must be currently enrolled in the EMT-P program in order to participate. (2 credits; a minimum of 120 hours in an off-campus facility with ambulance services). PLEASE NOTE: CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) and/or SORI (Sex Offender Record Information) and/or CHRI (Criminal Records Central Repository) are required prior to participation in this course.

Topics include advanced patient assessment techniques, caring for patients with special challenges, neonatal and pediatric emergencies, abuse and assault, geriatric emergencies and the chronic care patient. Emphasis is placed on the EMT-P working as a team member, and identifying the limitations of paramedicine in the emergency medical setting. (3 credits; 2 lecture hours, 3 laboratory hours)
