Martin and Malcolm: Advocates for Human Rights Pre: Communications Proficiency Co: This course seeks to critically examine the social context, the philosophical, and ideological framework of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Through biographical and historical analysis, students will develop a greater appreciation of the two historical figures. In addition, we will critically evaluate and relate the methods of each to contemporary U.S.A. and Third World racial social, political and economic problems. Geo-Cultural Development of New England and the North Shore Pre: Communications Proficiency Co: An introductory level geo-cultural history of the land, the people, and the unique role that New England and the North Shore area has played in the developing story of our country. This course will explore the evolution of common New England social institutions and cultural traditions using theory, discussion, and visits to key historic sites. The approach will be interdisciplinary utilizing concepts and methodologies from several of the social sciences and interactive as all students are expected to participate in a collective learning process. Reiki 1 - Traditional Usui Method Pre: Communications Proficiency Co: Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is a system by which energy is transferred through the hands. Energy flows through the practitioner to another person. Its gentle hand patterns are designed to bring the body to a state of relaxation and balance, enhancing the body's natural ability to heal itself. No special skills or belief systems are necessary. Through the assistance of the instructor, students will gain the ability to transmit Reiki's healing energy. Students will learn the history of Reiki, to use the hands to scan for general vitality, scan the energy centers (chakras). Fulfills open, liberal arts, and humanities electives.

Global Conflicts and Human Behavior Pre: Communications Proficiency Co: Using resources from the disciplines of literature and psychology, this course will examine the Holocaust as the prime example of ethnic and racial hatred in the 20th century. A case study approach will be used to make connections between the Holocaust and the escalating incidents of ethnic/racial/religious aggression and intolerance taking place currently in the United States and in the international arena. Attention will be given to such trouble spots as South Africa, Guatemala, and Bosnia. Fulfills open, liberal arts, social science, and humanities electives.

Theories of Healing Pre: Communications Proficiency Co: This course provides a practical and theoretical understanding of wellness and healing, relying on a variety of views, from scientific medical theory and practice to holism, a paradigm that incorporates emotion and spirituality. Topics include osteopathic, chiropractic, homeopathic and naturopathic medicines; mind/body medicine; and East/West forms of energy medicine, including bodywork therapies, spiritual healing, traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. Yoga, Meditation, & Stress Management 1 Pre: Communications Proficiency Co: Through lecture, discussion, and experiential exercises, the student will learn physical skills and breathing techniques that help to revitalize and quiet the mind. Practical applications of a series of gentle yogic movements, meditative techniques, and non-verbal communication skills including listening to the mind/body and recognition of the body's various energetic/emotional levels will promote self awareness. An overview of different health systems will be offered to establish a common ground of understanding useful in one's professional and personal life. The knowledge of herbs gained will permit some use for personal and family health plus preparing the student for more advanced study. Women's Spirituality Pre: Communications Proficiency Co: Traces the origins of women's spirituality focusing on goddess-centered religions, early myths, rituals, folklore, and healing. Explores women's religious roles in Judaism, Christianity, Hinuism, Buddism, Islam, and Confucianism emphasizing the ways women have lived their spirituality. Examines recent religious trends discussing women's ordinations, new liturgies, ecumenical dialogue, and the comtemporary goddess movement.
