Families in Crisis Pre: Co: Elect:OPEN A comprehensive learning experience which integrates the diverse issues facing not only children and families living in crisis, but also the child care professionals and parent educators who serve this population. Addresses these issues from a systems perspective in which participants examine the impact of families in crisis on themselves as child care professionals and parent educators, on their work with children and families, on their child care and family service programs, and on services from other community agencies. Includes a field experience component.

Child Development in Cultural Context Pre:One course in Child Development or ECE Co: Elect:OPEN Presents the perspective theory, and findings of classic child development theory, and then examines each from the point of view of children's development in differing cultural backgrounds. The students will leave the course with basic knowledge of the variations of children's developmental stages and childrearing practices in a variety of cultural contexts, and an understanding of the implications of a multicultural perspective in the provision of early childhood education and child care.

Leadership Development for School Age Child Care Profession Pre: Co: Elect:OPEN Designed to advance the program management skills of school age child care administrators. To be effective program leaders, they must be competent in a wide range of content areas such as finance, human resources, staff development, interpersonal interactions, marketing, and program evaluation. This course will present multi disciplinary management material in an applied context by pairing information classroom sessions with experiential field assignments.

Meeting the Challenge as a Community of Supporting Families Pre: Co: Elect:OPEN Provides teams of teachers, administrators, family workers, and parents of from inner city child care programs with an overview of resources, strategies, and information that can be helpful in enhancing a child care program's ability to cope with violence, racism, and poverty in the community. This course will provide community healing and building experiences to help promote adults own growth and well being so they can be more effective in their work with children and families.

Multicultural Methods and Materials for Early Childhood Educ Pre: Co: Elect:OPEN This course introduces educators of young children, infants-K, to multicultural education. Students will learn multicultural methods to welcome diversity into their classrooms, increase children's self esteem, motivation, participation, and sense of belonging. Multicultural materials for child care centers will be explored and created in class by students for their use in the field.
