Ecological Garden Design 2001 Gardeners and horticultural enthusiasts will find many new and exciting garden concepts in this class. Taught from a "no-pesticides" ecological approach, it includes plant selection and garden and landscape design. Basic ecological principles will be introduced and explored, and we will discuss how they can be implemented. We will cover native and non-invasive, exotic species, the elements of ecological design, and the economic benefits derived from this design style. Interesting case studies will be used to learn basic drafting skills. Draft- ing supplies will be needed and reviewed during the first class.

You will receive a list of pertinent publications, on-line resources and indispensable phone numbers. It will also provide you with important texts and glossaries to learn the language of Film and Stage. With talent, focus and presistence you can tap the scene in Greater Boston.

Landscape and Garden Maintenance-Summer, North Andover Pre: Co: Learn "on site" at Stevens Coolidge Place in North Andover, managed by the Trustees of Reservations. This outstanding 91-acre Colonial Revival estate is a typical "country place" of the early 1900's - a rural retreat designed as a complex of garden "rooms." This is a hands-on opportunity to participate in summer landscaping and garden maintenance with a field professional/supervisor.

Field Sketching for Landscape Design Pre: Co: Hone your landscape drafting skills by sketching on location in a few of North Shore's beautiful garden "gems." Class meets at a different local park, reservation, campus, or private garden on each of four Saturday mornings. No previous drawing experience required; all skill levels are welcome. Bring a sketchbook 9x12 inches or larger; several soft HB pencils, or felt tip pens such as Pentel, Flair, or Uni-ball. A small folding chair is helpful but not required. First class meets at the NSCC Cummings Center campus lobby. Location for the following week will be announced at each class.

Gardens to Design Pre: This class will provide a path for students to learn the essential steps in planning both functional and aesthetically appealing garden designs. We plan, analyze, and evaluate existing conditions of the property. An effective presentation of the final planting plan will be drafted and presented to the client. Learn effective techniques to sell your ideas without selling yourself short. A fourth or fifth week field trip is required to prepare for the site analysis of the client's property.
