    Pastels for Beginners and Intermediates Pre: Co: Find your happy medium between drawing and painting, with pastels. For beginners, learn the basics of pastel painting and progress from a restricted palette to full color compositions; for more experienced students, expand your skills on an individual basis. From still life to portraits, various subjects and techniques will be explored with demonstrations, fun, hands-on practice and one-on-one guidance.     Frugal Framing Pre: Co: Save time and money by learning to mat and frame your own artwork and photos at home. This basic workshop for non-professionals. Bring a piece to frame to the first class;learn what materials to purchase to complete your piece the second evening. The focus is on using standard sized, ready-made materials available at craft shops. A $5 materials fee is payable to the instructor the first class.

    Private Gardens Tours Explore up to 15 different and unusual flowering gardens of the Newburyport area with your own tour guide and floral design instructor. We will share and discuss flowering plants and botanicals from each of these gardens that you can easily grow and use in your own floral arrangements. This is a fabulous opportunity to see Newburyport in bloom and familiarize yourself with the many colorful "old and new world" floral combinations. Learn why some flowers are best used for edging borders, why others may be found grouped in perennial beds vs. the infinite use of creative containers used in smaller landscapes. You will see displays of both informal and formal with many unique and picturesque approaches to gardening for the novice or the expert. We will enjoy a late luncheon in the instructor's private backyard wildlife garden. Register students will receive an area map of where in Newburyport to meet.

Here is your chance to create your own personal journal and experiment with exciting new materials. Each week we will use poems as a starting point as we explore a new media. Be prepared to use unusual everyday materials like tea and coffee in your art-making process!     Vocal Techniques for Singers Pre: Co: Elect: Learn how to maximize your vocal ability! If you are a singer looking to accentuate your individual style, come and join our lively, yet informal group. The instructor will work with students on a on-to-one basis, giving individualized attention when needed. Relaxation exercises will include the highly successful Alexander technique. Acting and performance ideas will be offered. Each student will have many opportunities to solo within the group setting. Tape recorders are most welcome. Bring your choise of sheet music to class.

    Perennial Gardens & Maudsley Estate Tour Enjoy a leisurely stroll through Newburyport's best kept secret, the Maudsley Estate. Your nature walk will begin at the main entrance, meeting with your very own tour guide and florist. We will explore the intriguing landscaped pathways, trellised gardens and coastal trail following the Merrimack River while identifying the vast varieties of flowering shrubs, trees, bulbs, and wildflowers. Bring a "brown-bag" lunch to enjoy as we sit by the rivers edge at 12 noon. After lunch we will drive to the sophisticated "Newbury Perennial Gardens". Your entrance fee is included in the tuition. Here you will have the opportunity to discuss, view or select from flowering botanicals suitable for your home garden to capturing the memory of the day. Location maps will be mailed to registered students. Raindate: the following Saturday on the 25th.

    Cottage Garden Summer Florals (note: several sections of this course are offered) Discover the best ways to preserve and care for specific cut flowers before arranging them. Four (4) delightful "cottage floral projects await you beginning with tea cup arrangements, then a hand-tied, fragrant nosegay which can double as an elegant vase arrangement, a wicker basket filled with delicate, scented flowers and greenery, a fresh floral wreath or a fragrant rose topiary trimmed in organza. Florist supplies and all perishable materials are provided by your instructor through reinbursement for $15 per week/ per student.

    Wire and Beads II Pre: Co: Build on Wire & Bead I jewelry making skills to make finished pieces. Stringing, wire and wrapping, and knotting techniques will be demonstrated. Create wire sculptures that can be used as amulets or be hung as decorative pieces. Develop a strong portfolio of exciting and unusual jewelry pieces. Bring a sketchbook, pencil, 15yards of 20 gauge gold or silver wire (craft wire, non- tarnishing); pliers (flat-nosed and round-nosed); and a side-cutting wire cutter to first class.
