    Chinese Brush Painting - Gong-bi Pre: Co: Explore this ancient Chinese art form. Discover the ancient art of Gong-bi (fine-line) style Chinese brush painting in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. Distinctive brush strokes are used to portray feathers and flower petals. Start by outlining the subjects in ink on rice paper then fill in with layers of intense vibrant colors to create stunning visual effects. We'll explore flowers, birds, and fish using a combination of Chinese and Western techniques. Demonstrations and individual attention included. All abilities welcome.     Chinese Brush Painting - Flowers and Birds Pre: Co: Spontaneous-style Chinese Brush Painting uses minimum strokes to produce maximum effects. Each stroke captures the essence and spirit of the subject portrayed and the life force (ch'i) of the artist. In a relaxed and encouraging environment, learn to paint flowers and birds using ink and Chinese watercolor on rice paper. Explore a combination of Chinese and Western technique.     Botanical Drawing and Watercolor Pre: Co: Sharpen your observation skills and learn to draw realistic flowers and plants with attention to detail and color accuracy, using pencil and watercolor. Explore light and shade, form, and color mixing. Includes: demonstration, individual attention and plenty of time for painting. Botannical subjects vary each semester. All painting abilities welcome.     Learning the Rules Pre: Co: Ever wonder why one painting may capture your attention while another does not? One reason is good composition, which makes the design of the painting pleasing to your eye. Many artists have broken the "rules" of compositions successfully, but let's learn what they are at first, so we can use them or know why when we decide not to use them. In a hands-on, playful look at composition, create pencil sketches, pen and inks, collages, and then paint in the medium of your choice (watercolor or acrylic). Open to beginners, and- those with some experience. All materials are provided for a $25 fee, payable to the instructor at the first class.

    Jewelry in Handcrafted Designs Pre: Co: Elect: In this class, each of you will have the opportunity to learn the basic techniques used to create your own personal pieces of gold or silver plated jewelry. The choices are unlimited with a variety of assorted stampings, findings, beads, cabochons, chain and other components to express your own style of creativity. Each creation shall become a "I made it myself!" prized piece for you to enjoy. Your ideas are endless with the many components, made available to you at minimal cost, by the instructor. Bring a notebook & pencil. A materials list will be sent to each enrolled student.

    Japanese Garden Design Pre: Co: Explore Japanese gardening from philosophy and methodology through model making. Understand appropriate plant material, garden ornamentation and hardscapes in the Japanese style. Learn the hands-on techniques of raking, pruning, planting, and edging. Envision the final result by making a scale model of your garden in class. A fee of $18 for modeling materials is payable to the instructor at the first class.

    "A" Is for Artist in the Garden Pre: Co: The garden has been subject matter for painters, landscape designers, musicians, poets, writers and sculptors. Color, texture, design, rhythm, form, tempo, and structure are the palette gardening artists work with to create an environment. Discover a variety of gifted artisans who have been influenced by the garden as subject matter in many ways. Learn about roles each play with the other. Explore the boundaries of garden design with a touch of art history, and how you can apply your knowledge into your own garden design. Taught by a landscaping professional who is also an artist. Lectures, slide presentations and informal discussions will reveal the extraordinary relationship between the garden and the artist.

    Drawing Animals Pre: Co: Have fun rendering animals with realistic likeness using graphite pencils. Learn to draw fur, feathers, scales, eyes and other distinctive features. Focus on facial expressions, fur patterns, and unique characteristics. Explore shape, form, lines, shade, proportions, and anatomy. Subjects are varied but may include big cats, horses, dogs, birds, wolves, elephants, monkeys, giraffes, rabbits, deer and more. Numerous demonstrations and individual attention included. All abilities welcome.
