Perspective Drawing Pre: Co: Learn to draw interiors and exteriors in perspective. Focus on one-point, two-point, and three-point perspective. Create depth through figure ground relationships, gradients, overlap, and size change. Be able to represent landscapes and interiors from your imagination and still have them look convincing. Bring 2b and 4b pencils, kneaded eraser, 18"x24" drawing pad, and soft vine charcoal.

The Artist's Portfolio Pre: Co: Build an individual portfolio by constructing a series of works in your own mediums (acrylic/drawing/gouache/collage/ photography/watercolor) and your own themes. Each class will be structured around specific topics such as surface, composition, depth, color and presentation. This supportive environment will be a great place for discussing ideas and sharing in the creative process. Class is open to all mediums except oils.

Drawing and Painting for the Novice NEW! Pre: Co: Projects in this informal class setting are designed to help you express yourself through drawing and painting. Become familiar with drawing concepts and develop the ability to see in non-stereotypical ways. Explore line, shape, value, and color in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Open to all skill levels.

Drawing and Painting for the Novice II NEW! Pre: Co: We will build on the knowlege gained in the previous sessions, allowing students to develop a more expressive drawing vocabulary. Work with more themes, from botanical to architectural drawings and paintings. Experiment with a wide range of techniques and styles (both representational and abstract) in a creative learning enviroment. Please bring all materials to first day of class.

Woody Pruning Basics Pre: Co: Basic pruning techniques will be demonstrated in a hands-on class. Plant age, vigor, and flowering cycles influence what techniques and time of year should be employed when pruning. What methods you use to evaluate what works depend on these variables. You will have the opportunity to practice the techniques covered. This is not a high tree course. Only pruning that can safely be done from the ground or from short ladders will be covered. The course is appropriate for professionals or home owners. Textbook required, available at the Danvers campus bookstore.

Design and Plant Your Own Kitchen Gardens Pre: Co: We will discuss designing and preparing a backyard kitchen garden. Topics will include soil testing, composting, seed starting, and recommended plants for New England gardens, including heirloom vegetables. Design your own garden in class, using simple techniques, and take home a flat of planted seeds. A materials fee of $5 will be payable to the instructor in class.

Habitat Gardens Pre: Co: Attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial wildlife to your garden through selection and care of their favorite plants. We will discuss various wildlife, their habitats, and which plants will entice them to spend time in your garden. Also learn environmentally sound ways to deter wildlife you'd rather not have around.

The Mixed Border Pre: Co: In a mixed border, the combination of annuals, perennials, shrubs, bulbs, and even small trees in the same garden bed creates drama and interest. The combinations are limitless and sometimes a bit overwhelming. We will examine several mixed borders to see what makes them successful and discuss how to use this design technique in our own gardens.

Planning a Four-Season Garden Pre: Co: With a bit of planning you can create interest and enjoyment year round in your garden. Starting with the "bones" of the garden, we will explore ways to use plants and garden structures for a variety of effects as the seasons change.

Gardening with Native Plants Pre: Co: Learn what makes a plant "native" and which plants are native to New England. Many of these trees, shrubs, and flowers are attractive and carefree additions to the home garden. They also provide an excellent wildlife habitat. Learn about identifying, purchasing, and growing them in your own backyard.
