Pre: Co: Elect: INTORDUCTION TO CHESS: Designed for the beginner, this course introduces the student to the "royal game." First session presents the pieces and their moves. Subsequent sessions teach a greater appreciation for the tactical and strategival possibilities of chess, mating combinations, chess openings and theory, and an exposure to grandmaster games. Participants will play with each other while instructor observes and coaches. A class tournament may be arranged. Students must bring a chess set and board to class. Ages 6-14.

Pre: Co: Elect: CHESS STRATEGIES: Designed for those who already play chss, this course features more advanced tactical drills and an introdution to the "five strategic factors of chess" king, center, piece, pawn, and space. Class will learn how grandmasters develop thematically, exploit strategic weaknesses, advance mobile pawns, etc. By the last session, students will attempt to anticipate grandmaster moves in complicated positions. Students must bring a chess set and board to class. Ages 6-14.

Pre: Co: Elect: NEWS AND SPORTS WRITING: Apply your powers of observation and writing skills to the exciting world of journalism. Here you will learn the language of the newsroom and pick up tips on writing clear, interesting acconts of what you see and find. Learn how the field of sportswriting is a relatively new and independent branch of journalism with specific types of articles such as advance stories, straight game acconts, features, columns and sidebars, the course will include a tour of the Salem Evening News facilities. Class limited to 12 students, ages 10-14.

Pre: Co: Elect: UFOS FOR KIDS: A basic introduction to the controversial, yet fascinating, subject of UFOs -Unidentified Flying Objects. "What are UFOs, hoaxes, hallucinations or spaceships?" Then, in a manner that holds class interest from beginning to end, students are presented the facts abour UFOs. Included are taped interviews with astronaunts and military pilots who have encountered UFOs, samples of classified UFO sightings and documented examples of government cover-up. Ages 9-13.
