ESL Quick Start Pre: Co: If you speak a little English, this class will help you with speaking and listening skills you need to survive and succeed in a new country. Practice speaking through every day activities, like making appointments, getting a job, shopping and managing money. Assignments may also include: listening to a variety of different materials, practicing in different situations outside of class, and building the vocabulary needed for everyday activities in the community. Textbook required, available at the Danvers bookstore. Prerequisite: Basic ESL I or equivalent.

Advanced Conversational English Pre: Co: This course is intended for advanced speakers of English as a Second Language who would like to improve their speaking skills. Emphasis will be placed on achieving a greater degree of fluency and accuracy. Topics will be generated from current events, newspaper and magazine articles, and students' hobbies and interests. A variety of speaking modes will be practiced, including debate and oral presentation. Textbook required, available at the Lynn campus bookstore.

Basic Computer Skills for ESL Pre: Co: A basic computer course designed for intermediate non-native speakers of English. Focus is on gaining the confidence necessary for the basic use of computers. Hands-on sessions in a Windows environment, using Microsoft Office 2003. Learn how to: open, close, size and switch between windows; create, edit, format, save, and print a document in Microsoft Word. If time allows, also learn spreadsheet basics in MS Excel. Build the necessary foundation for further study in computers. Prerequisite: Keyboarding on the Computer, or typing ability of at least 15 - 20 words per minute.

Using high-interest readings and video extracts to stimulate ideas, you will become more confident in your ability to express yourself in English. The course will include a variety of vocabulary, editing, grammar and writing activities and will provide an excellent foundation for credit-level intermediate ESL classes. Irish Language and Culture Pre: Co: Examine the politics, history, art, language, and literature of the Irish and Irish-American experience. Receive a brief introduction to Irish-Gailic, the oldest language still spoken in Europe, as well as an examination of the various events that have shaped Irish culture. Look at events through the eyes of poets, politicians, scholars, musicians, and common folk. Emphasis is on cultural immersion in a fun, media-rich environment.

Academic Skills for Basic ESL Students Pre: Co: Recommended for students intending to take credit ESL classes next semester. Students will concentrate on reinforcing and developing their individual reading, writing, and oral skills in preparation for Intermediate ESL classes. Some sessions will take place in the ESL Multimedia Lab where students will use a variety of audio and video materials. Textbook required, available at the Lynn campus bookstore. English Pronunciation and Oral Practice Pre: Co: For non-native speakers of English who want to improve their pronunciation of English sounds so that they can be more easily understood by native English speakers. You will meet individually with the instructor to help identify the sounds that are difficult. Pronunciation practice will include oral dialogues, poem recitation, and short presentations. Learn to understand the phonetic pronunciation symbols in dictionaries. Prerequisite: an intermediate level of English or above.
