In the second phase of a two-semester course, participants will conduct a semester-long classroom-based research project using a combination of theories, methods, analytical and interpretive teachinques introduced in part I. Participants will complete a written research report, present an overview of their projects and findings, write reviews of research articles related to their projets,a nd complete a conference presentation proposal. Prereq: EDUC 816

Examines topics relevant to English. Emphasis is on English content appropriate and relevant for Elementary, Middle and/or Secondary school teachers. Not open to undergraduate majors in English.

Explores the writing process, providing practical strategies and techniques. Emphasis is on constructing texts with attention to various levels of organization and development.

Reinforces college-level reading, writing, and revision skills. Emphasis is placed on rhetorical stance, textual analysis, and linguistic integrity. Prereq: ENGL 100 or placement

Explores personal essays from the classical era to the present. Uses a workshop format where students write a variety of personal essays, choosing from among meditation, confession, letter, memoir, portrait, prose poem, reportage, and humor.

Introduces the concept of self-identity, examining it within the contexts of gender, sexuality, health and ethnicity across media and society. Using interdisciplinary approaches, this cultural studies course focuses upon themes which explore myths about identity through analyzing meanings in media and social/cultural texts; how these originate in and across history, to become part of everyday's common sense discourse. Prereq: ENGL 150

Introduces students to 35 mm black and white photographic and darkroom techniques. Includes various forms of composition including photo-journalism. Students are expected to provide a manual 35 mm camera, photographic paper, and film.

Experiments with various approaches to creative writing by focusing on questions of originality and creativity in language. Stresses the exploratory and playful approaches both to language itself and, more importantly, to the production of meaning in language which opens avenues to effective creative writing.

Focuses on film interpretation by emphasizing elements such as light, sound, composition, camera movement, acting, and direction. Initiates students into developments in film history, film genre, and film theory.

Surveys various media, stressing their historical evolution and the technological and socio-cultural forces that shape them. Includes newspapers, magazines, film, radio, and television.
