An investigation of a selected topic of interest in biology, with an emphasis on reading and discussion of the primary scientific literature. Students will learn to critically read the current literature in biology, to analyze and interpret data and to present their analyses of these works to the seminar group. Library reference work and practice in the preparation of written reports will be included. Prerequisite: junior/senior standing. Three hours per week.

This course is taken in conjunction with directed research, and emphasizes independent research proposal development and effective proposal writing skills. Offered fall semester. Prerequisite: Senior standing or permission of instructor. A co-requisite for BI 493A. Three hours per week.

A work-study experience co-supervised by the Internship Coordinator and a mentor in the workplace. Students are placed according to interest and career path in an academic, community, or industrial setting for the purpose of gaining hands-on experience in the field of environmental biology. Prerequisites: senior standing and the consent of the department. Does not fulfill departmental upper elective requirement.

In lieu of a formal course, qualified upper class students may substitute an intensive program of study under the direction of a member of the department and with departmental approval, which must be obtained prior to registration. Prerequisites: BI 127A, BI 128A, CH 111A, CH 112A, and consent of the instructor.

An intensive faculty-directed undergraduate research experience. May be taken as a single semester course or followed by BI 496A for a full year of research. Prerequisites: junior/senior biology major status, consent of instructor. Co-requisite BI 482A.

All Biology, Athletic Training, Health Science and Sports Medicine majors are expected to demonstrate the skills and knowledge they have acquired in their program of study in a senior capstone experience culminating in a public presentation to the Merrimack community and a final integrative paper. This requirement may be satisfied within any one of the following courses: BI 484A, 491A, 493A, 496A, 498A, 499A.

This course is intended to provide freshman civil engineering students with the communication skills needed in college and throughout their careers. Computer skills, report generation, public speaking, listening and computer-aided drawing are covered. Design is emphasized throughout. A video record of each student’s progress in public speaking is compiled. Three hours a week.

An introduction to plane surveying and a laboratory for the practical application of classroom subject matter. Topics include distance measurements, leveling, errors, traverse surveys and computations, stadia measurement, topographic mapping and highway curves. Two lectures and one laboratory period per week.
