Analysis of the social, religious, political, ideological and constitutional issues involved in the coming of the Revolution, the Confederation Period, the Constitutional Convention, and the Early National Period Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

Emphasis on institution of slavery and ante-bellum Southern civilization, the causes of the war, the war ’s revolutionary dimensions, the tragedy of Reconstruction and the emergence of the New South. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

Begins with the rise of the centralized Russian state and the consolidation of power. Special attention given to the enhancement of autocracy, the institution of serfdom, and social and economic developments which characterized Imperial Russia to the end of the Tsarist system in 1917. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

Includes a brief survey of Tsarist Russia to provide historical perspective; Russian Marxism; detailed attention to the causes of the Revolution; analysis of its moderate, radical, and reactionary stages; the particular roles of Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin; the Cold War; Khrushchev and “peaceful co-existence”; Brezhnev and his successors; attempted reforms; and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

In lieu of a formal course, qualified upper-class students may, with the approval of the chair, substitute an intensive program of reading under the direction of a member of the department.

Fall term only. Required of all history majors. Topics are selected in the complementary course, HI 300A, Introduction to Historical Methodology. Course includes student preparation of seminar papers and critiques. Prerequisite: HI 300A and consent of the instructor. Three hours a week.

Independent study projects for superior students of junior and senior standing at area museums and other history-related institutions. Approval must be obtained from the chair and the faculty member involved. Course may be taken twice for credit.

Off-campus work-study experience in areas related to the discipline of history. Practical experience in editing, administration, education, public relations and the like. Supervised by a member of the department and will involve a field-based project. Effort is made through this program to expand the occupational potential of the history major. Open to superior students of junior and senior standing with consent of Internship Director.

An introduction to Greece in the Classical Period (sixth to fourth centuries B.C.) with some attention to the earlier civilizations of Egypt and Crete. Lectures, readings, discussions and films cover such topics as Greek mythology, art and architecture, theater, government, philosophy, social organization and human conduct.
