    A course designed to teach the student the basic techniques of writing music-including aspects of structure, instrumental usage, handling of different textures and compositional principles. Intensive creative work, often leading to readings of this music and a final work in performance will lead the student to both technical and musical self expression. Prerequisite: FA 231A or permission of the instructor. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

    An introduction to the three major areas of directing: script analysis, directing fundamentals, and practice. Students will explore through readings, written and practical exercises the goals and processes of directing for the theatre. Course culminates in student directed ten-minute scenes.

    Students will learn the principles of basic design and publication design as applied to print media. Attention will paid to layout, typography and interfacing with commercial printers.     The internet has created another outlet for designers’ creative expression. This course will examine the principles behind effective web page design. Students will design and produce sites for personal expression and for institutional and marketing applications making use of tables, frames, gif animation, forms, videos and audio. Software: Dreamweaver, Photoshop, ImageReady and supporting utilities. No Prerequisites. Three hours a week.

    Much of the animation seen on the internet is vector-based, 2D animation. Because of its modest bandwidth requirements, vector-based animation allows very large and lengthy presentation as well as short, high impact graphics in ads. This course will involve producing sophisticated web animation integrated into a Falsh based web site. Software: Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and supporting utilities.

    Sometimes referred to as virtual reality, 3d computer graphics makes use of the creation of a 3 dimensional object or environment through a process called, “modeling.” Beginning with a wire-framemodel, imagery is developed though the application of a surface to a model (texture mapping) and the introduction of virtual lights, cameras, other 3D objects and background images. The result can be output as a single image for an illustration or the objects or camera can be moved over time and the resultant animation is output to video. Student portfolios will consist of printed illustration and videos on CD-ROM. Software: Lightwave, Final Cut Studio. No prerequisites. Three hours a week.

    The course will deal with the life, art, and times of Michelangelo: the history of Florence from the age of Lorenzo the Magnificent to the end of the city’s Republican institution and the installation of the hereditary Medici rule; the history of the papacy, its attempts to combat the crisis of faith within the church, and its struggle with the monarchs of Europe; and with Michelangelo the man, the artist and the Christian, who in his life sought but was unable to stand apart from the conflicts of his epoch, and in his sculpture, painting and architecture, drawing and poetry gave expression to these conflicts with a scope and depth equaled by none of his contemporaries. Few were able to escape the power and reach of his influence. His age saw itself through the images that he created for it. Prerequisite: consent of the instructor.     An introduction to literature on the visual arts of the Western world from antiquity to the present. Emphasis will be placed on contemporary methodological approaches to art and architecture that are currently being practiced and examined as independent topics of inquiry within the discipline and history of art. Slide/lecture and discussion. Required of all Fine Arts majors. Fall and Spring semesters. Prerequisite: FA 161A and FA 162A or consent of the instructor. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

    Multimedia is an assemblage of still images, video, animation, audio and interactivity designed to communicate information or expression or to provide recreation for a user. The primary medium is the CD-ROM. Students will undertake through a series of assignments and a final project to master the many facets of multimedia including user interface design and production issues. Software: Director, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro and supporting utilities. No Prerequisites. Three hours a week.
