FA 203A: Basic Photography

The basics of 35mm camera operation, film developing, and printing within the context of the zone system will be examined. Examples of photographic work from the history of photography will provide a basis for the development of the photographic vision. Students will develop and print in darkroom sessions and must produce a portfolio of ten photographs. A 35mm camera capable of manual operation is required. Students must provide film and photographic paper. No prerequisite. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

Work will continue on technical ability with the camera and in the darkroom while identifying and pursuing a photographic vision. Through study of various photographers representing different genres, a direction and goal will be chosen for a semester-long project. Relationships will be drawn between technical choices and self expression. The development of a personal style and the ability to transform ideas and emotions into images will be stressed. Prerequisite: FA 203A. Three hours a week.

This elemental drawing class uses structured weekly projects based on the portrait. Goals will be to develop skills of observation, an understanding of anatomy, proportion and how light reveals form. The course will also cover the historical aspects of the portrait, relating to composition, symbolism and style. Teaching will involve weekly demonstrations, individual instruction and group critiques. Students will work with various media, including pencil, charcoal and conte crayon, using photographs and live models. Three hours a week.
