The basics of 35mm camera operation, film developing, and printing within the context of the zone system will be examined. Examples of photographic work from the history of photography will provide a basis for the development of the photographic vision. Students will develop and print in darkroom sessions and must produce a portfolio of ten photographs. A 35mm camera capable of manual operation is required. Students must provide film and photographic paper. No prerequisite. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

Work will continue on technical ability with the camera and in the darkroom while identifying and pursuing a photographic vision. Through study of various photographers representing different genres, a direction and goal will be chosen for a semester-long project. Relationships will be drawn between technical choices and self expression. The development of a personal style and the ability to transform ideas and emotions into images will be stressed. Prerequisite: FA 203A. Three hours a week.

A course designed for the listener to music (not the musician) to help understand how music is put together, what to expect in a symphony, a sonata, an opera, etc., and how to be able to listen with understanding and greater enjoyment. Form will be discussed in layman’s terms; through the use of examples, form will become audibly intelligible to the student. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

An approach to drawing and its values through studio experience. Seeing is emphasized through a series of exercises involving figure and still-life drawing primarily concentrating on line. Light and dark values are investigated later in the course. Abstraction is briefly considered. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

A continuation of Basic Drawing I. Light and dark modeling and perspective drawing techniques are developed. Abstraction is emphasized in the latter part of the course. Collage is explored. Individual drawing projects are developed. Prerequisite: Basic Drawing I or similar experience or permission of instructor. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement.

Through a significant number of personally executed projects done outside the class, the student is encouraged to develop a strengthened intuitive capacity in seeing and making. Much of our attention is on learning to master the elements of visual illusion; however, this is only the format we use to come to an understanding of the meaning of the design process. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

This course explores the basic design elements of: space, surface, point, line, shape, form, color, texture, and pattern in the context of three dimensions. This is a hands-on studio experience with projects that consist of preliminary studies as well as “finished” works. Each project includes thumbnailsketches, rough examples, library research and a class critique. Each student will receive a project point evaluation sheet after the completion of a project. Three hours a week.

This elemental drawing class uses structured weekly projects based on the portrait. Goals will be to develop skills of observation, an understanding of anatomy, proportion and how light reveals form. The course will also cover the historical aspects of the portrait, relating to composition, symbolism and style. Teaching will involve weekly demonstrations, individual instruction and group critiques. Students will work with various media, including pencil, charcoal and conte crayon, using photographs and live models. Three hours a week.

An introduction to the principles of painting through direct studio experience with an emphasis on the plastic nature of painting and basic pictorial values. Attention to the needs of individual students. Prerequisite: recommendation of instructor. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three and one half hours a week.

A continuation of FA 227A. The student is encouraged to experiment with materials and visual-structural systems. Prerequisite: recommendation of instructor. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three and one half hours a week.
