Introduction to the principles of effective communication in modern organizations, with particular attention to written communication. Emphasis on analyzing audience, achieving appropriate tone, and developing effective rhetorical strategies to relay information, shape ideas, advise, instruct, persuade, and establish rapport. Prerequisite: EN 105A or exemption. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

Study of theory, materials, and methods underlying the teaching of writing, with emphasis on current theoretical approaches and pedagogical applications. Practice in workshop and conferencing techniques, responding to student papers, constructing sequential assignments, and individualized instruction. Familiarizes students with the current issues and practices in writing instruction and with current research in literacy, reading, and composition. Prerequisite: EN105A or exemption. Recommended for English Education majors. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.

Emphasis on how ideas are discovered and arranged received and debated through submission of several written papers as well as an oral presentation. Study of Beowulf and other poetic and prose works of the period 700-1100 in modern versions as well as in the Anglo-Saxon. Study of the development of drama from the age of classical Greek theatre to contemporary theatre, with emphasis on both the literary and theatrical dimensions of dramatic art and on the cultural work that drama performs in various periods of theatre history. Readings from such playwrights as Aeschylus, Sophocles, Shakespeare, Ibsen, Brecht, Beckett, Churchill, Norman, and others. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.
