Each of these courses provides for 300 hours of observation and student teaching under the supervision of a program supervisor and a supervising practitioner in an elementary school, moderate disabilities setting, middle school, or secondary school. The student must spend at least 175 hours with full teaching responsibility. Periodic conferences and weekly seminars with the program supervisor are conducted during the semester. The program supervisor and supervising practitioner evaluate the progress of the student teacher at the mid-term and final meeting according to the standards for teacher licensure. Students must apply for the Practicum in the Education office in late February or early March of the junior year.

This course will address current practices in the education of children with special abilities and disabilities. The major areas to be covered in this course will include the characteristics and needs of children with communication problems, visual and hearing impairments, physical and healthrelated challenges, mental retardation, learning disabilities, gifted and talented attributes, and emotional and behavioral disorders. The process for identification, referral and placement of students through an Individual Education Plan (IEP) will be reviewed. Examines strategies for the integration and inclusion of special education students who are placed into regular classrooms. Three hours a week.

This course will focus on theories of language development, including differences between first and second language acquisition, and the effects of disabilities on learning. Special emphasis will be placed on phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics (especially the critical stages of development of each linguistic component). Three hours a week.
