EC 301A: Economics of Education

This course examines a variety of questions about the role of education in the economy and about the economic aspects of the educational system. We will study the historical development of public education in the U.S. and discuss different theories that purport to explain that development. We will investigate the relationship between educational attainment and wages in the labor market. A considerable portion of the course will be devoted to analyzing such controversies as: the issue of school choice, the equalizing or disequalizing impacts of school, and merit pay. Prerequisite: EC 201A or EC 202A. Three hours a week.
